DVD : Witchfinder General [1968]
A clear breakaway from the formula horror films that filled the 1960s, from Hammer, Amicus and Roger Corman. This Tigon production relied on a young maverick director delivering us on a new path to damnable happenings. In this artily directed film he gives us a horror that was historically real. The lovely introductory spoken narrative explaining the dire state of England being torn apart by civil war sets the serious tone for the rest of this film, the sort of tone that had been missing from all the big studio horror films mentioned above. This is not fantasy horror, we are being reminded, but real horror fashioned out of religious paranoia. So when we eventually get to meet the villain of the piece, the stern puritan lawyer Matthew Hopkins, ... Read More:

I'm too young to have see before but having seen several of the 40s serials on DVD- def rate this as one of the top three that I've seen- it's also a mystery serial cos you don't know who the Scorpion is until the last chapter- the flying scenes of Capt Marvel are also fantastic for a serial that was made so long ago when all they had was strings to make it look as though someone could fly!

One of the darker movies of Hitchcock's British career, but one of the most successful at the box office, Sabotage is by no means a flawless film, but still does manage to come out on the positive side of the equation.

Veloc's attempts to strike fear into the hearts of London by causing a power cut are laughed at by the newspapers so his paymasters withhold his payment and say that in order to get his money he has to deliver a bomb, timed to go off during the Lord Mayor's parade. What Veloc doesn't know is that the friendly fruit monger next door is actually a policeman and he is already under surveillance. When the policeman notices Veloc sneaking back into his cinema on the night of the power cut, yet later insisting he was in all night, ... Read More:

DVD : Tales of Terror/Twice Told Tales [1962] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
The first film is a Roger Corman / Poe classic featuring three tales, all staring Vincent Price and other great veteran actors such as Basil Rathbone and Peter Lorre. The first story here involves a tormented Price who keeps his dead wife upstairs who soon enough returns to life and goes on a rampage! The second story is my personal favourite Corman/Price effort - called The Black Cat. Here the cast from 'The Comedy of Terror' are re-united and Peter Lorre plays (perhaps too believably) a bumbling wineo, who runs into Price at a wine tasting contest. Soon enough Price becomes Lorre's new best friend and is making sure he has plenty of booze money - but only so he can entertain his wife while Lorre is away at the pub all night ! Lorre finds out, returns ... Read More:

Irwin Allen's cost-consciousness gets a workout in the second half of this compilation of episodes from his single-season science fiction adventure. Not only did the show continue its use of stock footage from earlier theatrical films, there was an over-utilization of Bernard Herrmann music, especially themes/melodies from "Garden of Evil" and the classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

Watching the episodes back to back, one realizes how frequently a group of actors appeared in that single season. Though they would be assaying different roles, actors John Crawford, John Hoyt, Kevin Hagen, Vitina Marcus, Vincent Beck, Malachi Throne, Michael Ansara, Rhodes Reason, and Lawrence Montaigne would repeatedly find themselves, like stars James Darren ... DVD : King Kong - The Eighth Wonder Of The World [1933]
One of the greatest movies ever made and certainly one of the most influential. With many memorable images and scenes,'King Kong' has stood the test of time no matter what the modern audience might think. This fantastic movie was made in 1933 and when you take this into account the effects are nothing short of amazing. Is it perfect?Well, the dialogue can be cheesy, the acting can be hammy and the close up of Kong's face never really convinces. But so what? This truly deserves to be the legend it is simply because it is the greatest fantasy film ever.Yes,'Lord Of The Rings' or 'Wizard Of Oz' are also marvels of cinema but for me it is Kong that stands above them all,the king of the movie world.

If you have a multi region DVD player then you really should ... Read More:

"I am going to Inverness!". - Though he never does! I always remembered this one for that very line!
From the four released so far, this is the best, and may be the best of the whole series, though I remember the nun one being very good too. I wish they would hurry up and release the rest. I want them all! Anyway, back to this one, Ian McKellan is extremely good and effective as a nice, rather colourless little man going to work every day and not interfering with anyone but minding his own business and being very self contained, and then some weird bird watcher type accosts him on a train, with tales of tape recordings, one of which he 'accidentally' leaves with Mr Skipling (McKellan's character) by mistake, and this, Mr Skipling later listens to at home, and this ... DVD : The Giant Behemoth [1959] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
I finally have finally viewed this hard-to-find item [at least in the UK] and it is a mixed bag of routine melodrama and effective suspense.

The first part of the movie entails a too-large cast of unknown curio actors, sombrely relaying the proceedings with stoney-faced conviction.

It's the BEHEMOTH we shelled out to see, however, and when he finally appears, he is an effective, memorable addition to the annals of ANIMATED MODELDOM. Working exceptionally well in extreme close-up, the hyper-detailed model exudes slimy menace, and is enhanced with several cuts that blend in live-action stampeding from the human victims within the same frame.

Good use is made of partial-miniature sets and even cut-out background photos of buildings, [a ... Read More:

DVD : The Day of the Triffids [1962] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
i remember seeing this series on t.v. when i was just a kid and it scared the living beejaysus outta me.i cant see what all the fuss was about now.you can see many similarites in the opening scenen with other horror films such as 28 days later, the stand, the crazies etc. there aren't any jump out of your seat moments but the atmosphere and exposure of a selfish human nature in a "survival of the fittest" setting is dark and is in itself a horror. the triffids themselves are a new species of plant that came to earth via a comet and are like big lumps of broccoli who poison and then eat their victims.99% of the population of the world is blind after a comet burned out an optical nerve in the eye, and therefore the human race is being hunted down by plants (who move at ...
