One cold rainy night in England with nothing to do I turned on my television (only four channels available) and found a new show called Inspector Morse. I have always been a fan of the detective story in print and had read extensively in the genre. Similarly I was a great action buff, with one of my favorites being the Streets of San Francisco (I wonder why that is not available on tape or DVD?).

At first, the pace of the drama was slow and a little bit irritating but I recognised John Thaw from that superb action show, the "Sweeney" and Patrick Troughton as the irrepressible second Doctor Who. It did not take long before I was hooked by the simple device of trying to figure out whodunnit. Usually in these things, especially Columbo, ... Read More:

First shown during the late 1980s, these two classic Morse episodes are more than a welcome addition to the DVD catalogue despite the fact that they are often repeated on television.

Of the two episodes shown here, both are very good, although Service Of All The Dead is the slightly better one. The body of a church warden has been found with a knife in his chest in a quiet country church. As the mystery unfolds, there are four more other deaths before Morse finally solves the mystery. There is a sub plot with Morse, a life long bachelor being drawn to the mysterious Ruth (Angela Morant, who is very good, by the way) who may or may not be an accessory to the murders. The ending is quite surprising which what makes the Morse series ... Read More:

Possibly no more can be said about how good the Inspector Morse television series was, and judging by the state of the home made programmes we are forced to endure now, we may never see it's like week in week out again.Anyway....
Of these two episodes for some reason I did not rate the Day Of The Devil that highly when I first watched it, for some reason it struck me as being at odds with all the other episodes. That being said it's what you might call a grower, although it's probably my least favourite. This being Morse though it is still quality.
Twilight Of The Gods is an excellent episode though and the DVD would be worth the price for this alone.I can't give the story away obviously but it's intriguing to watch two of the protaganists ... Read More:

This dvd is definitely worth watching, but only because The Way Through The Woods is so enjoyable. The Daughters Of Cain is ( in my opinion ) a very boring college episode, and personally I prefer the non-college episodes better.

The Way Through The Woods=This is one of my favourite ( not quite my overall favourite, though ) episodes of Morse and it was highly enjoyable. I didn't guess the ending, which is good, and it is a great ( and sad ) ending. One thing that I thought was very funny about this episode was that Lewis is trying to get the Inspector's job, and Morse keeps on being really nice to him in front of Superintendant Strange, that is weird to watch. Although this episode starts off kind of slow, it picks up later brilliantly ... Read More:
