DVD : Miss Marple - A Caribbean Mystery
This is one of the Agatha Christy novels to film "Miss Marple series" staring Joan Hickson.

Miss Marple is given some time in Barbados for here health. There she is in the right place and at the right time to help with the mysterious death of Major Palgrave. She and millionaire Jason Rafiel bandy wits over who did it and why. Again Miss is more of the catalyst and also points out the obvious (at least to her) to others such as Captain Daventry (Zakes Mokae.)

This story introduces you to Jason Rafiel who will turn up again in Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, "Nemesis" (1986). This was much better than the 1983 version with Helen Hayes. This version is fuller and closer to the book and closer to Jane Marple's character. ... Read More:

When elderly spinster Jane Marple (played by Margaret Rutherford) attends a meeting of trustees for a training ship for juvenile delinquents, and one of her fellow trustees drops dead under mysterious circumstances, she realizes that it is time for her to investigate.

I must admit that my wife and I chanced across this Miss Marple movie after having become great fans of Joan Hickson's interpretation of the role, and were not too happy with it. Later, however, having accepted that this is not Joan Hickson's Miss Marple, but accepting it for its self, we came to love this movie. Margaret Rutherford brings a real presence to the role, adding a touch of humor, and making the story (not actually written by Agatha Christie, but a good mystery ... Read More:

Rex Fortescue is out of character as he arrives at is office. You immediately know something is wrong because this is England and Rex has ordered his tea much too early. Yep mean old nasty Rex is found dead. Thorough detectives have determined that there was some mysterious grain in his pocket. If you remember the nursery rime you can follow the story. So how does Jane become involved? She trained the maid and is afraid for her safety. Naturally at several places in the mystery Miss Marple (Joan Hickson) points out the obvious to Det. Sergeant Hay (Jon Glover) who realizes and corrects the error of not listening to her.
There is only one repugnant scene where you have to watch Rex eat. Other than that it is a thoroughly enjoyable mystery.

DVD : Agatha Christie's Miss Marple - Sleeping Murder [1987]
This film is an excellent adaptation of Agatha Christie's book. The actors were well chosen.

Géraldine Alexander and John Moulder-Brown is a convincing newly wed couple. The couple gets to solve the lion's share of the mystery with guidance from Miss Marple of who warned them not to pursue the mystery. The location is beautiful and requires a vision of the sea. As with most Marple mysteries everyone and no one did it. In fact we are not sure that there was an "it" to did.
So get out your teacakes and sit back watching that new fangled invention that the Americans like (the TV) and be swept away to the Sleeping Murder.

Margaret Rutherford - the original Miss Marple investigates yet another murder.

'Murder At The Gallop' has a host of stars and includes the usual suspense. Also features her 'lovely' real-life husband (how did she get him?) Stringer Davis, who's agility (particularly on the dance floor) is more than a match for the energetic Rutherford!

A great performance here from Dame Flora Robson, and some humorous moments, including an entertaining scene when Rutherford and her husband do 'The Twist' on the dance floor, and out-do all the young things!

Entertaining stuff!

Mrs. Dolly Bantry (Gwen Watford) tries to inform her husband of the reported body and is accused of imagining the report due to reading trashy books in bead at night. As usual Jane is always in the right place to view the potential suspects. Clues are everywhere yet who would mix bodies and books?

Speaking about night I would not start this film to late, as it seems to go on forever at 151 minutes. As it was a made for TV (1984), I suspect that this video is a composite of a series. And there are places where it takes leaps to different situations with out any transition. You can guess the plot in general but the details are surprising. It is wrapped up so quickly that you will need to run the ending a few times to put it all in perspective

DVD : Agatha Christie's Miss Marple - At Bertram's Hotel
It is not easy comparing movies to books, especially Agatha Christie's novels. However this one has the feel and just the right actors. There is great attention to detail.

If you have the nagging feeling that you saw Chief Inspector Fred Davy (George Baker) before it may be that he has been in at least 100 movies and shows, recently as Detective Chief Inspector Wexford in Ruth Rendell Mysteries.

Bertram's Hotel is just how Jane (Joan Hickson) remembered it as a child. She soon comes to the conclusion that it is to good to be true. The Chief Inspector is of the same mind. This film has several overlying plots. However just being in the hotel will distract you from them.

So get out your muffins, sit up in bed and watch ... Read More:
