As the title suggests this is a documentary chronicling the rise of the so called slasher movie in the 1980's with such films as "Friday 13th", "Halloween", "Prom Night" and the "Nightmare on Elm Street" right up to the "Scream" series of the mid 90's. The film contains some great slasher moments (Jason's 'death' etc) but the highlight is the vast array of interviews with big names from the genre, there's the usual big guns such as Wes Craven and John Carpenter, the genius that is Tom Savini, but you also get loads of lesser known names thrown in the mix with plenty of interesting anecdotes such as Paul Lynch ("Prom Night") and Fred Walton ("When a Stranger Calls", "April Fool's Day"). Actually, so the story goes, Joe was a gas fitter from Sheffield. No matter. I remember seeing this motley crew on tour, and as hormone-filled young man, tended to focus on the backing singers, Claudia Linnear and Rita Coolidge. However, the music is great too, and a nostalgic reminder of the raw power that Joe used to deliver. Alas, the picture quality suffers at times, but there was no HDTV in those days, after all. Highlights for me were "Delta Lady" and "She came in through the bathroom window", with the horn section swinging and Leon Russell hammering the ivories for all he's worth. Good times.

Not knowing quite what to expect quality-wise from this documentary I was pleasently suprised that it unequivocally lived up claim of exploring the 'mindscape' of Alan Moore. Comics fans may be disappointed that there is not more about his work and writing methods but inany case all of that is available elsewhere, indeed 'Writing for comics by Alan Moore' might be a good place to start and the (I think) soon to be reprinted 'The extraordinary works of Alan Moore. Moore may have already outlined many of the key ideas espoused in this documentary before but the joy of this DVD is that the uniqueness of Moore's worldveiw the compellingness of his diatribe in his inimitable bass northampton drawl would make this documentary accessible even to those ...
