I can only reiterate the comments already made about this dreadful product - however, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed its unremmitting awfulness. True, it seems to have been made from a set of still images found in someone's attic and collaged together in someone else's garage, but there is something rather compelling about the clipped diction in best Queen's english and the brio with which the odd italian word is delivered. The sheer nerve of the producers in using and reusing the same out-of-focus images over and over is rather impressive - even now I feel a nostalgia for the fuzzy nuns photographed in St. Mark's square. This documentary is a masterpiece - a classic - the gold standard by which all film biographies of musicians will be measured in future. It's editorially balanced, showing Karajan's faults as well as his strengths. It's also wonderfully crafted, effortlessly blending modern interviews and archive material - black and white and colour. The editing is so subtle you hardly notice it at first viewing. You just concentrate on the content which is riveting. But repeated viewing shows master-craftsmen at work. All the clips are cut back to sound bites so the film moves at a cracking pace, but never too fast. Underneath the clips are long lines of music - scrupulously chosen. This particular installment of the brilliant "Classic Albums" series is an absolute must for fans of the Who and especially the amazing "Who's Next" album. Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle are especially engaging interviewees, their reminiscences often funny, sometimes sad and always informative. They are more than ably backed up by Glyn Johns, the album producer, former manager Chris Stamp, biographer and fan Dave Marsh and Keith Altham, among others. The footage of the Who performing some of the songs live is priceless. What amazing power and energy those four guys had at their peak. Definitely one of the greatest rock bands on the planet, ever! This DVD shows a mix of the sold-out Madison Square Garden concert from 2003 as well as some studio footage of the production of Jay-Z's at the time "final" album `The Black Album'. Both parts of the DVD (which are blended into one) are excellent, from Hova being in the studios with all time great producers such as Timbaland, Pharrell, Kanye West and Rick Rubin, picking from literally hundreds of beats to produce the perfect and unique album of his career. Dreadful production, appalling quality of film, just 50 minutes of poor quality clips from Top of the pops, with words and lips not even in sync, and a bunch of sycophantic, schoolboy quality reviews from people you are unlikely to have ever heard of. Amazon - should you be selling this?? Shocking.

I too agree that the 'one star' reviews are very unfair. Most fans would not expect this set to have included the 68 special and therefore would not have found the wording on the packaging in the least bit misleading. This is worth adding to the collection not for Elvis performances, but for the huge wealth of information presented on the man from those close to him. Sure, some of this is well trodden ground, but there are some very interesting insights from people that are rarely heard from, such as Steve Binder (68 special director) and Dixie Locke (early girlfriend). Fans will also appreciate that the tone is generally positive - steering clear of the sensationalist angle. If you are a big Elvis fan, I would definitely recommend this as a good purchase.

There aren't many contenders for this dubious title, but I can't think of any other film that does a better job of conveying the appeal and depth of its subject. I saw it at the cinema when it was first released in 1979, and this version on DVD (somewhat expanded, extensively restored and cleaned up) brings back happy memories of the way it commemorated the band at the height of their powers (Keith Moon died while the film was being edited). There's an extraordinary collection of film from TV shows, interviews, amusing vignettes and concert performances, which all show the way the band was continually striving for new sounds, thinking about their significance and influence and worrying about the relationship with their followers and critics.
