This film, starring the doomed belle of Andy Warhol's Factory, became a cult hit after its release in 1972. The death of Edie Sedgwick at 28 from barbiturate intoxication after filming had wrapped and her subsequent ascension to the pantheon of Sixties icons undoubtedly account for a large share of the film's notoriety. The distinction between Sedgwick's 'high' life and Susan Superstar, the character she portrays, is after all a vague one: well-known pictures of Edie at the apex of her fame (modelling for Vogue in miniskirts & black opaque tights, appearing in Warhol's short films) are used recurrently and even footage of her 1971 wedding and a newspaper article reporting the shock news of her death are briefly shown. If like me you are heavily into hawtin/plastkman then this is a must. A real 'this is your life' of Mr. Hawtin with interviews, insights, and explanations of how and why he makes the music he does. Lots of story and well made too, as you should expect from a veteran perfectsionist....not just one camera interviews, lots of extras some nice studio clips and hes one lucky man to have a family like he has! plenty of Detroit Techno nods with all the main players (some good some bad) Highly recommended and cheap. Just makes you dig out all the Plus 8 stuff. A real minimal treat.

At a running time of about 2hrs and 9 mins, with full-length performance clips interspersed with brief interviews, this superb DVD runs through all the major hits and backstory of the Impressions, before taking full-flight with Curtis' excellent solo material. What really comes across is Curtis' passion for social commentary and unnerving willingness to tackle some dark and challenging subject matter. Yet with a disposition and voice so sweet, the contrast between some of the lyrics and the way Curtis delivered it was incredibly effective. The majority of the material here is from '72 and '73, so his Superfly period is well covered with some excellent live performances. Well, I'm a fan of the Flaming Lips but this is a great documentary nonetheless. Insightful, passionate and personal this really is great. It reflects one of their last albums in some ways by being weird, wonderful and having a touch of heart leaving you satisfied on every level. It starts by delving into the murky past where there's a lot of noise and confusion and then it breaks into their success and their ultimate position as one of the best bands ever. It even has real human interest and a touching story of Steve Drodzs' heroin addiction and his redemption. It also has Wayne telling the story of how his father's death affected him and the music and the happy story of how "a bunch of okies" (wayne's quote) managed to get where they were. All in ...
