This DVD has tracks from both The Bands first two albums. So you get some analysis of the first album (Big Pink) as well as the famous brown album. The reason being that they were all recorded at the same sessions. Its a fabulous documentary, with great interviews and analysis at the mixing desk, perhaps most memorably Levon who still gets carried away with the music. Little known gems like Whispering Pines are given added poignancy when Richard Manuels suicide is mentioned late on in the film. Sadly Rick Danko died a few years after this film was made. I decieded to rent The Devil & Daniel Johnston purely because I was going through an obsessive Kurt Cobain phase & after seeing a trailer for the movie & the mere mention of Cobain I went straight down to Xtra-Vision & got it out. Presuming you've read them movie synopsis, I'll go on to critique. A quirky, insightful documentary of a could've been, while I don't believe he could have been particularly great having purchased listened to his music. In other words if Johnston hadn't had so many high profile celebrity fans, or even Cobain wearing a band-tee of Johnston's, this documentray would have never come about. This is a good buy in my opinion. Tells you in depth about the conception of detroit techno and the main players. If you are already into detroit techno then you will allready know most of the info and it doesnt really shed any new light but still... its inspirational. If you are into making electronic music,rather than listening,this is a must, even shows you bits of studio footage and kit lists. Only 4 stars? well the DVD boasts about music within the DVD?? there is none to speak of, just background interview stuff. Dont pay too much though as a couple of watches and that will be it. Keep the 808's and 909's banging.

This DVD is great! It shows more of the producing side of the music, about Kurt's thought process behind the album cover and more. It goes in depth into the songs (more music than the lyrics). Great to get more of an inside into his music. I would give it 5 stars, but I think it could have been a bit longer, and previewed a bit more footage of Kurt himself in his heyday.

just bought gentleman jim reeves 2006 dvd very good if you have not got gentleman jim reeves 1990 because they are both the same so save your money if you have the first one i was looking forward to seeing a new dvd of jim reeves but was very disopointed to find it was the same one i had bought befor wish these people who bring these dvd out warn people they are not new could have saves my self the time and money getting it but if you have not got the first one then enjoy the dvd

i know what the other reviewer means it is annoying that the audio mix is not so clean,but It is worth hanging in there and sticking with it, this has lots of information on it some of which I knew and some that were new to me, some of the clips not seen for years are still laugh out loud funny and it's curious that some of the re-telling of Marx legends (like how they got their names), not only vary from relative to relative but alos differ from both Groucho's memoirs and Harpo's! Still great fun and worth the few bob it costs to learn a little more about these wonderful comedians.
