When this film was released in 1949 ten years after the last of the great Fred and Ginger musicals of the 1930s it was considered a disappointment, however fifty seven years later it is a wonderful farewell to this immortal dance duo, and with DVD enabling us to fast forward through the less than inspired background story we can enjoy the wonderful dancing again and again.

Apart from Fred and Ginger as the squabbling married dance team we have Oscar Levant a prominent concert pianist of the time who also acted in films giving exciting iron fisted performances of “Sabre Dance” and “Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto excerpts” in the robust virtuoso manner of the time.

It is a great surprise to discover that a musical can celebrate 'Hippy' beliefs and still maintain a dark shadow. A draft-card is burned at the beginning of the film; the spectre of Vietnam is ever-present.

'Hair' is at once a study of class, individuality, 'Counter-culture' beliefs, gender-equality and anti-war activism. Added to this potent mixture is the symbolism of growing one's hair; alluding to personal assertiveness, freedom, natural beauty and individuality. Near the end of the film there is a touching scene of one of the hippies getting his hair cut. The mood is tense and a portent of tragedy looms.

The music is fabulous: percolating rhythms and tunes that stick in your head. Sometimes the lyrics are rattled ... Read More:

After reading other reviews slating this film for a less exciting ending and having missing songs.... please read up on the history of this musical. It is a stage production and this Disney version stays very true to the stage musical and score. There are still omissions, in particular the Herbert Hoover song by the homeless people and also the Tomorrow song in the White House. But in the main it is a much more realistic adaptation than the Aileen Quinn 1981 film which just changed huge chunks and added songs (like the hideous Let's Go to the Movies sequence instead of the much more captivating NYC). How anyone can prefer the 1981 version is beyond me, the characters of Annie, Grace and Warbucks are so much more likeable in this one and Kathy Bates ... Read More:

DVD : Chitty Chitty Bang Bang [1968]
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang [1968] 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' is my second favourite after 'The Wizard Of Oz'. 'Chitty' stars Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes, Lionel Jeffries, James Robertson Justice and Robert Helpmann. Though this release onto DVD is the Full Screen version of this film i personally prefere it due to the fact this is a wonderful transfere to Disc, with it's lovely deep colours and so beautifully restored it looks like a modern film. Dick Van Dyke is superb as the children's father who rescues a vintage racing car from a junk yard and gets the car working again. He decides the car should be called 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' and he tells his children a story of how the car is magic and able to float and fly. Everything is so wonderful about ... Read More:

These 4 young men take my breath away and I am in my 70's. I fell in love with them the very first time I saw them on the Ellen show. Simon Cowell found the very best. I put their CD in my player at night and they sooth me right to sleep
Are they going to come to the states again soon? Next CD please.... I have them both and the Encore. Is there another one out there. Thank you Carlo's, David ( by the way My Maiden name is Miller) (Just thought I'd throw that in)Sebastien and Urs for giving us this beautiful music and your wonderful style of your performance on stage.

This film of Verdi's Otello has an awful lot going for it. Ably led by the masterful conducting of Lorin Maazel, the performance enshrines marvellous portrayals of Otello and Desdemona by Domingo and Ricciarelli who deliver performances which both vocally and on the screen often touch greatness. With the typically sumptuous sets of Zefferelli, the film is often quite memorable (for example, at the unforgettable close of the first act).

Yet, as previous reviewers have pointed out, it is indeed a pity that the director chose to cut the Willow Song. That said, with a running time of 1hr 58Mins, Zefferelli wields the axe on Verdi's score with disconcerting ease, with the consequence that the poetic beauty of Boito's libretto and the dramatic sweep of ... There's little reason to see this Fred Astaire-Eleanor Powell movie except for the dance numbers--and they provide the best reasons in the world. The plot involves a song-and-dance team (Astaire and George Murphy), a Broadway show with a big star (Eleanor Powell), mistaken identity, true friendship and boy gets girl.

Most of the dance numbers, however, are extraordinary, with songs by Cole Porter. Powell sings and taps out "I Am the Captain" in a major production number featuring big sets and lots of chorus boys. She shows why she was a great tap dancer and a major musical star who could carry a movie by herself. Astaire and Murphy do "Please Don't Monkey With Broadway," a fine example of a song-and-dance tap act that involves intricate patterns, ... Read More:

This has to be the most exuberant production of all time. There is not a moment wasted and the direction and acting are sensational.

This is a lyrical tour de force. How does Natalie Dessay manage to control her voice whilst lying down or being thrown around? Juan Diego Flores is a delight and in fine voice and the supporting cast is wonderful.

A not-to-be-missed masterpiece by Donizetti.

This is a wonderful feel-good movie for kids (and parents!). My son loved it as much as my daughter. Awesome stunts and a good message. Highly recommended.
