At 27 years of age, my husband bought this for me for Christmas, as I love this time of year and happy festive films. This is the first time I have ever seen White Christmas and I loved it! I would really like to find more classics of this type but I have no idea where to start! An excellent film, I can't wait to see it again!

Sumptuous, rich, lush and inviting. Like a gilt-edged dream, Joel Schumacher's "Phantom of the Opera" is a triumphant love note to beauty, song and scenery.

Adapted from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical (and Gaston Leroux's novel), this movie ends up being beautiful in every scene, with solid acting and and a tragic antihero. The singing, the sumptuous sets, the acting -- all are the ingredients of a musical tour de force.

In 1870, a Paris opera house is under new management -- just as diva Carlotta (Minnie Driver, a glorious diva-from-hell) is almost killed by a stage curtain, and stomps out. Fortunately Christine Daae (Emmy Rossum), taught by a mystery tutor, can take over the soprano's role, and soon becomes famous for her ... Read More:

I had last seen this film as a young girl, and after watching an am dram production in winchester recentley decided to give it another go. I'm amazed at how "modern" and relevant this film is. Milie is smart and surprisingly clued up for a girl new to the city. White slavery is a weird concept for a musical but it works brilliantly and gives it an edge to go along with the fast paced plot line and toe tapping songs, A perfect film to buy your mum for mothers day and watch it together.

In this animated film Suzie Templeton has remained fairly faithful to Prokofiev's original story. There are subtle differences where the story has been adapted for the modern audience and for when the medium of animation make a change necessary. Prokofiev's wonderful music remains unchanged. As there is no dialogue from any of the characters and no narration it is the animation alone which gives the film its narrative.
The hunters are portrayed as two incompetent and cowardly thugs which means that there is a tiny bit of violence in the film. In a scene near the beginning (before any of Prokofiev's music) Peter accidentally collides with one of the hunters in the street and so annoyed is the hunter that he pins Peter up against a wall and then throws ... Martha Argerich, for many of us, has long been an enigma. She has always been a private person, one who does not seek the spotlight, who even cancels performances because, it is said, of nervousness, shyness. Filmmaker Georges Gachot, after years of entreaties, gets her to agree, to speak with him on camera. She comes across as a soft-spoken, shy, immensely intelligent but often cryptic person, one who has idiosyncratic but attractive ideas about her relationships with composers and various pieces of music. For instance, she will not play the Beethoven Fourth Concerto because she is afraid of 'what might happen', this after talking about the galvanic emotional effect it has had on her ever since she heard Claudio Arrau play it when she was six.

"Listen," says exasperated dance teacher Penny Carroll to her two-left feet customer, Lucky Garnett, "No one could teach you to dance in a million years. Take my advice and save your money!"

We can't help smiling because Penny is played by Ginger Rogers, and the clumsy Lucky, who saw Penny on the street and was smitten, then finagled his way to the dance studio to meet her, is Fred Astaire. But Penny's boss overhears her comment and fires her on the spot. Lucky comes to the rescue. "Now, umm... how did you say that last step went?" he asks Penny. "Oh, yes!" And with that he swings her out to the dance floor and they launch into "Pick Yourself Up," one of the most expert and cheery fast tap polkas you'll ever hope to see.

Some say Swing Time is ... Read More:

Memory told me this was a dissappointment, many criticise Geldorf's performance - well what else was he supposed to do except act like a screwed up depressed individual, which I think he did well (no offence Bob - I'm backing you on this). I really enjoyed this film after a break of numerous years, some excellent moments visually and aurally, well packaged, and the soundtrack is to dream for - wonderful sound. I found this a satisfying disc and probably now prefer it to the CD. One gripe - the repackaging suggests that the Limited Edition disc is an improvement on the standard version, it isn't ! They seem to me exactly the same - but the packaging in the Limited Edition is much superior and just about justifies buying it.
