I have to agree with all the other posters that the performances are fantastic, but potential purchases beware!

The audio on these DVD's certainly ain't Hi-Fi: they're highly compressed and recorded as two-channel MONO. There is plenty of room on the DVD for true PCM stereo, so either there was a technical hitch when creating the DVD or more likely it's the result of a shifty maketing descision to increase the value of the CD set (I assume these ARE stereo).

Shame this information isn't available on this web-site or the packaging.

This is the best of the two Miller movies. The storyline is largely incidental, the important thing being the music - and what music. The Miller band never sounded better than when recorded on the Fox sound stage and 'though all the numbers are well known Miller tunes, the versions on this DVD are very different from the RCA Victor studio recordings. There are plenty of sequences showing the band in action and for dedicated fans it's possible to pick out and name the musicians, some of whom would carve out distinguished musical careers later - Billy May and Ray Anthony in the trumpet section, Bobby Hacket, also trumpet but in this film playing guitar, (he'd just had some dental surgery). Tex Benneke of course on tenor sax. Incidentally, George Montgomery's ... Read More:

I had high expectations of this - not least because of the somewhat over enthusiastic reviews here.

I was very dissapointed. It seemed totally insincere from the outset, and though I bared it until the end - I was wishing for the end to come sooner!

I did like the fact that the makers were trying to do something different. And that in a way is admirable. But it was done at a pace that was so slow - I'd have preferred to be watching my washing dry.

It's a real shame it didn't work. I can't really reccommend this film at all. And even if you are a lover of Porter's songs - as I think I'm amoung many who are - it is not enough to make you 'love' this film.

Of the 4 leads in this musical, only Vivienne Blaine belongs in a musical, being a major vaudeville & Broadway singer & hoofer before this was made.

Despite this, it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience, good colour and sound and an outstanding supporting turn by Stubby Kaye. Jean Simmons retains her English innocence well as a Salvation Army lass and even assists in helping you forget that Damon Runyon's picaresque language translates hopelessly to screen.

But the best bits are Brando & Sinatra. Brando surprisingly fits well into Sky Masterton and tackles things with enthusiasm. There's also a permanent smirk on his face, because he knows that Frankie wanted HIS part all along, and doesn't it show! Frankie's face throughout looks ... Read More:

This 1990 World Cup concert, which launched the Three Tenors phenomenon, has a beautiful open air setting at the Caracalla Baths in Rome. This means however, a loss of acoustics. Orchestral sounds that would be enriched by a little reverberation literally drift away on the evening breeze. But the singing is excellent. They sing 4 solos each, then - after a sinfonia, or orchestral interlude - 3 more as a trio; 16 tracks in all. All three singers are perfectly at ease in the Romance languages, but struggle with German and English, sometimes quite badly. In the worst example, 'Maria' from West Side Story, Pavarotti bellows, "Say it soft and it's almost like praying". Well, we'll have to take his word for it.

Despite these imperfections, the DVD remains a joyous ... Read More:

Hey, you're 54 and you have to dance round the screen! WOW Could this guy dance or not? Astaire was the very best exponent of screen dancing (sorry Kelly fans) and this is his best film by a long chalk. Cyd Charisse is, well, fantastic. Beautiful, elegant, and a great partner. Different, very different, from Ginger but then the dancing is different proving that Fred did move with the times. There isnt a bad song in the show nor a bad dance. It is quite simply, along with Silk Stockings, the best of Astaire.
If you like good music, good dancing, a happy ending, and a 'put on a show' story, then this will do.
Buy it, buy it now and enjoy!!
