A weak but pleasant farce based on a play, there's really only one reason to watch this movie, and that is Danny Kaye. The man had a unique talent for making tongue twisting lyrics not only possible but intelligible. This movie is no exception, with a few witty songs, fewer still witty moments, and more than soupcon of gurning along the way.
In terms of content, the style is light and frothy, with the satirical nature of Gogol's play on which the movie is based is sweetened away almost in its entirety. Message filled farce has given way to Danny Kaye vehicle, often way over the top. That said, it does raise a smile with infectious humour. There are a few good lines.. "Oh, I love my family, but I'd give my six kids to get rid of my ... Read More:

I first saw this film when I was little and was very touched by it, so it seemed obvious to buy it when it came out on DVD. After having studied the life of Buddy Holly I found this film to be very true to life.
Gary Busey made an excellent Buddy Holly and is very talented with regards to music as well as acting since none of the origional scores were used in the film and Busey performed each one of Holly's songs. A friend of mine remarked that if you heard Busey singing and were not aware that it was him you would swear it were Buddy Holly.
I found the special features of this DVD very good. I enjoy listening to the auido commentary with the film's director (Steve Rash) and Gary Busey, it is interesting to be shown the human errors and ... Read More:

A musical about WW1 ?
Very hard to believe, and I can't imagine how they managed to 'sell' the idea to whoever financed it, but thank goodness they did.

Although this concept should never have worked, it breaks every rule in the book to successfully convey the shift from eager anticipation of a walkover victory, to the anguish and futility of mass slaughter.

Just don't expect 'Saving Private Ryan'. It's not about guns and bloodshed, but about how people actually felt as the fight dragged on and the horrors mounted. And because you associate with the characters, you care about them.

On the off-chance you don't like this film, can I suggest you fast-forward to the final five minutes. The closing shots ... Read More:

Wagner - Tristan Und Isolde (Barenboim)

For me this production by Pierre Chereau of Tristan has no weaknesses and is a great achievement.

Ian Storey (Tristan) is an English singer working on the continent who was suddenly catapulted into the role of Tristan (he had never seen the opera) at La Scala in one of the most important productions of recent years, learning the role in an incredibly short period. The result is a very impressive performance, although up until the Act 11 Love duet it feels somewhat a work in progress, however from then on he finds his feet and all is fine.

Waltaud Meier is at the top of her game, and with Matti Salinen as King Marke and a fine Kuwenal in Gerd Grochkowski, and a very attentive ... Read More:

If I'm commenting on the film I would have to say it's wonderful. I've always loved it, probably because of the music, scenery and it's a perfect way to spend a couple of hours.
If I'm commenting on the product, it was so annoying to have an intermission in the middle. What's the thinking behind that? It may not bother most people but it really irritated me. If I'd wanted a break I would pause it when I wanted. I sold my DVD and will probably buy a video. That's the only reason for the low score.

This film is worth watching from many perspectives. The life of Vaughan Williams is portrayed in a balanced way, the excerpts from his music are beautifully played and presented, the interviews are excellent and informative. Interesting narrative and a great subject all make this a film for all abilities and backgrounds, from the lay person to the professional musician.

The audio is the best I've heard on blue ray and the video is equally impressive with the vivid colours and detail of the period costumes shown to great effect.Exhilerating musical numbers, beautifully designed sets and great performances make this unmissable.
