Regarded by many as the best Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, it still manages to pack a punch after all these years. Most people will probably already be familiar with the hymn-like standard 'You'll Never Walk Alone', but there are plenty of other gems here that are worth tuning in for. Fans of Frank Sinatra may recognise Billy's 'Soliloquy'. The scene on the beach where Gordon McRae belts it out is now a movie musicals' classic. My personal favourite is the beautifully tender duet 'If I Loved You', a song so loaded with the promise of romance and deeply felt regret all at the same time - surely (or Shirley??) one of the best love songs in any Broadway repertoire. This has to be the best film Elvis ever made.From the opening scene with Elvis singing "Crawfish" to the very end,this film rocks! Elvis shows great acting talent,sings great songs and the storyline is strong.If you only buy one Elvis film,this should be it.I've watched it half-a-dozen times and my wife over 40 times.The story is of Danny rebelling against the direction his parents would like him to take,falling for the right girl and then the wrong girl with a little fisticuffs along the way.Recommended fun for all ages.Buy it and enjoy.

This is Bizet's Carmen brought into World War 2 and given a black American cast. Oscar Hammerstein wrote new words for Bizet's music. The show was first produced drung WW2, and this movie was made in 1954. Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte are grand together. What a shame they used opera singers for their singing voices, both had musical ability. I believe a more jazzy flavour to the music would have worked just as well. At least Pearl Bailey's singing voice got used, Her 'Rhythm On A Drum' is one of the film's highlights. Just like Carmen, Carmen Jones is on the unstoppable route of tragedy and self destruction. I bought "Odyssey" and "Pure", the former being my favourite CD, because of reading Amazon's reviewers' comments. They were right. I then saw Hayley's DVD and thought I would definitely buy it after reading the reviews again. I am not disappointed and so glad I did purchase this DVD. What can I say about this brilliant singer that hasn't already been mentioned by the other reviewers? I absolutely agree with everyone - a sensational classical singer who can sing all types of songs. The video on "May It Be" is so good too. I am watching the DVD now and it's great - see other reviewers' comments - they are absolutely right! I know I will play this DVD as well as the two CDs many times. A very good buy!

If you are interested in musicals but have never tried any Gene Kelly films then this is a great place to start. 4 of the 5 films here are of his best and 2 are classics that stand up to any competition. The most famous,and rightly so, is 'singin' in the rain', a classic that is far lighter than many of it's contemporaries and far funnier too,(the scene where the lip-sync. goes wrong is great stuff),.
