Grease 2 is an unfortunate case of carrying on from reputation, without putting any thought into what originally made the first film so special. The acting is lamer than Jean Claude Van Damme killing 20 soldiers with 2 bullets - AVOID!

The Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds is one of my favorites since I was young. I own the vinyl version, the SACD version, and now the live concert on DVD. Each time I ear this music I can't avoid go to ecstasy. I like especially the theme 'The Spirit of Man'. I think Tara Blaise performs beautifully Beth in this live concert and Russell Watson too in the role of the parson. Is wonderful hear the music that you know for 30 years and see how is perfectly executed for professionals that enjoy his work. You could see in their faces, especially Jeff Wayne as conductor. This film has been on my wish list for quite a while, I just remembered that it was a wonderful film, full of great set pieces, good songs & beautiful orchestrations, my only regret is that I didnt buy this earlier. I bought this because of the two versions of the film, for the commentary from the director Stanley Donen, and for the documentary presented by Howard Keel himself, where everyone recall's how this supposed 'B' picture at MGM eventually became a huge hit that is still as enjoyable today. As a film it is tight, there is no real filler the story moves at a good pace and it all falls together beautifully, as Stanley Donen says in his commentary, it was a film made by great professional's from top to bottom and it shows. ... Of the 4 leads in this musical,only Vivienne Blaine belongs in a musical, being a major vaudeville & Broadway singer & hoofer before this was made. Despite this, it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience, good colour and sound and an outstanding supporting turn by Stubby Kaye. Jean Simmons retains her English innocence well as a Salvation Army lass and even assists in helping you forget that Damon Runyon's picaresque language translates hopelessly to screen. But the best bits are Brando & Sinatra. Brando surprisingly fits well into Sky Masterton and tackles things with enthusiasm. This is an exceptional movie on many levels. The adaptation from play to screen carried without the look and feel. The music outsells the movie. They picked the best actors for EVERY part. The use of colored filters [Todd-AO (70-mm version)] and actually using a remote island (Tioman Island, Malaysia) added to the exotic feel. The social implications are still with us today. Got this DVD on a recommendation as Im a big musical fan. I lived in London when this was on but not being a Madness fan didnt go and see it. What a mistake. The Madness music exists to propell the story along and what a story. Its not often a musical has a book of this strength. The story is told from 2 perspectives- a dark side when Joe breaks the law and runs away and a light side when he hands himself in instead and indeed it looks for most of the show as though crime does pay...or does it? The performances are superb and the guy who plays Jo deserves extra praise as he is never off stage. The cast all seem to be loving it and this comes straight off the stage out of the TV. At 27 years of age, my husband bought this for me for Christmas, as I love this time of year and happy festive films. This is the first time I have ever seen White Christmas and I loved it! I would really like to find more classics of this type but I have no idea where to start! An excellent film, I can't wait to see it again!
