This is an exceptional movie on many levels. The adaptation from play to screen carried without the look and feel. The music outsells the movie. They picked the best actors for EVERY part. The use of colored filters [Todd-AO (70-mm version)] and actually using a remote island (Tioman Island, Malaysia) added to the exotic feel. The social implications are still with us today. With all the cinema options today I almost forgot that I had this tape until yesterday when Ray Walston who played Luther Billis died. Love Branagh. Hate opera. Thought I'd give this a shot and I quite enjoyed it but I am not converted. Helped that it was in English. However, what I don't like about Opera is the way, particularly the women sing, it is not a natural noise. I don't understand what they are trying to say and the plot is pretty mad in any case so it being unclear is not great. What would have REALLY helped is subtitles. There are none and I think that is really a missed opportunity.

I was looking forward to receiving the newly released version of Gypsy. Great songs, cinematography etc. However I was very disappointed. Beware this disc is NOT widescreen, but pan and scanned from a very poor original negative, unlike the region 1 release. Hard to believe that with the emergence of widescreen TVs etc. that DVDs are released in anything other than letterbox format these days. A missed opportunity to release a definitive region 2 release.

This film is a joy from start to finish and, as has been mentioned elsewhere, the colour and sound reproduction on the DVD are excellent. On this `special edition' there is also an interesting extra in the making of documentary - Easter Parade: On the Avenue - in which you get to learn interesting little snippets such as the fact that Anne Miller had to dance her numbers in a surgical corset due to the fact that, shortly prior to shooting the film, her husband had pushed her down the stairs and broken her back! Also, some might not have known that, but for a similar, though not quite so severe injury, Gene Kelly might have been playing the lead. What a film this is!!It is a firm favourite with myself, my 2 sisters, and my daughter, and we range in age from 22 to 50!! The film is great, the dancing is fantastic, the sound track is wonderful, it has everything a girl could want. It recently won a poll for the best chick-flick of all time, and I know, because I voted for it!! It is one to watch over and over. Patrick Swayze is SO fine, and yes, we would all LOVE to have been Jennifer Grey.I know that it was made on quite a low budget, but what a success it has been. I think in 20 years time, it will STILL be voted best chick-flick, and what more can I say? The time of our lives? You bet!!

An affecting and hypnotic musical from the talented French director Christophe Honoré. A lot of people compare it to "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg," but I confess that I like this one better. Perhaps because the movie is more contemporary, and more daring in some respects (e.g. in its portrayl of "ménage à trois" and homosexual loves), yet the melancholy love story is tender and timeless. I love all the songs in the movie. They are soft, dreamy, sometimes quirky, sometimes sad, with beautiful lyrics. Although the actors are not professional singers, for my ears they sang wonderfully. Grease 2 is an unfortunate case of carrying on from reputation, without putting any thought into what originally made the first film so special. The acting is lamer than Jean Claude Van Damme killing 20 soldiers with 2 bullets - AVOID!

I can't believe it has taken me so long to 'discover' this film. I remember it being my parent's favourite movie. I recently bought for my children as they loved the Sound of Music. I have to say that it is the only film that has ever made me cry, and several times at that. I never thought a musical would do that. 'If I loved a you' has to be one of the most beautiful and moving love song ever written, and it is beautiful orchestrated in the astonishing 'Louise's Ballet', (check it out on You Tube). What an abstounding dance scene, I have never seen such wonderful male dancing, when a man can be so masculine and yet so graceful.
