This innovative, spellbinding new television series, Merlin, draws its audience in to a world full of intrigue and magic right from the start. The episodes are original, exciting and with some excellent yet not over-used effects, and compelling characters.

The actors are extremely well-cast bringing the series to life, whilst its combination of Robin Hood/Dr Who style excitement and well developed plots (with magic as prominent here as Robin Hoods' archery skills and the Doctors' Time Lord science), this new series is a real treat to watch.

Whether you are a younger viewer or over 18, 'Merlin' has something for everyone, with its exciting, new interpretation of the legend. Some recognizable names give tantalizing ... Read More:

When Omar Shariff enters as a speck on the horizon it takes him five minutes to reach the foreground. Letting a match burn down to his fingers, Peter o'Toole explains, "the secret is not to mind it hurting."
Every frame of this movie, the greatest ever, stays in your mind's eye.

What can I say about this 7 Oscar winner of 1962 that the other reviewers haven't said already? This is a wonderful film and a great epic that was directed by David Lean (Ryan's Daughter, Brief Encounter), he is probably one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and most of his films have some of the best cinematography you have ever seen taking advantage of the landscape. In Lawrence of Arabia there is a breathtaking shots of the desert; the musical score ... Read More:

This is one of the worst films I've seen in my life! When you are watching it,you absolutely can't stand Jane, who is presented sometimes as a mean and sometimes as an old spinster. The worst thing about the film is the way it was shot.Director did a poor job, especially when characters are walking,or dancing because it's like camera is moving as well,so sometimes it was so bad for my eyes. After you watched this film the only conclusion is that Jane Austen was a sad little creature-a plain Jane.

Having seen Baraka on its theatrical release on New Zealand's biggest screen I have been longing to re-capture that feeling of utter awe and emotional connection that occurred when I first saw it. That day has finally come and their incredible remastering and high resolution scanning of the 65mm negative, as detailed in the accompanying mini-documentary, was the final stroke of vision and foresight which will make Baraka the standard by which other analogue transfers are measured.

I was, all over again, stunned and amazed by this incredibly beautiful film where every shot is an absolute masterpiece and some of which leave me literally with goose flesh and almost moved to tears by the magnificence of it all. Truly a must have for any Blu Ray player owner.

Spielberg making money out of making children cry isn't my idea of a good film. The special effects are terrible, even when it came out they looked ropey, but again it serves to fool children. I couldn't be happy about making my money from making kids cry, and then be able to sleep at night like Spielberg does. ET himself is a plasticy Mother Teresa without lippy on, Elliot is annoying as characters go and the whole alien thing is silly. Fire in the Sky is a better alien film than this.

I'm bemused by the tendency to assert that this film is a veiled Vietnam film, "ostensibly" about another war, as this Amazon review puts it. It IS about another war, one that was far more important to the nation where it was written and filmed, and in which the father of writer and director Charles Chilton was killed. Anyway, I watched it as a First World War film, and that is how it has always seemed to me: it comments on all other wars, implicitly, of course.

It's silly to compare or measure this against most other war films, because it is so unlike any other, but it stands out as a dramatic, cinematic, narrative gem. A serious musical about the horrors of war: sounds as likely as a serious musical about living in Nazi Germany. Oh, wait...someone did that too. Cabaret must ... Read More:

I would give this no stars at all. There was NOTHING beautiful about "life" for the Jews who went through the Holocaust. This is the most cynical, insensitive, arse-covering, insulting interpretation of the Holocaust ever to be produced. I hate it! And I hate that foolish Roberto Benigni for producing it.

This is my favourite adaptation of a Forster novel and it has thankfully been re-released as a proper widescreen version which fills the full screen of my TV. (The original DVD was a failed experiment in adaptation resulting in a shrunken picture in which very little was visible whatever TV shape you were using). Despite being rooted in the uptight Edwardian social rectitude of 1908, the novel still has plenty to say about the present day. At the time Edward Morgan Forster was firmly cowering at the back of the closet and channelling his hidden homosexuality into a critique of his time. People behave as they think they should behave. They repress their wonderful true nature in order to conform to stereotypes and thereby diminish their own existence. If you feel that we have all grown up since then, may I ... Read More:

Watch out!

I bought this edition after reading the "Amazon.co.uk Review" above, where it says "On the DVD: Citizen Kane in this DVD special edition is beautifully remastered and comes with a feature illustrating the before and after of the restoration process. A 50-minute documentary, 'Anatomy of a Classic', hosted by Barry Norman, delves into the making of the film..." etc.

Big mistake: Nothing of the description of the DVD is true! The review is written about a completely different edition of the film, not this one.

The original film is a masterpiece, but this edition is certainly not!
