DVD : Poirot - Agatha Christie's Poirot - The Affair At The Victory Ball / The Mystery Of Hunter's Lodge [1989]
Poirot is invited by Captain Hastings to go to a fancy dress victory ball. Six of the guests turn up in the harlequin costumes worn by the clowns at the Italian comedie dell arte. One of them is a forthright American lady, Mrs Mallaby, who is on the hunt for a rich Englishman, another is a collector of fine china, and another is Coco Courtney, an actress with a liking for a certain white powder. At the ball Coco's partner, a promising young politician who has led a campaign against drugs, is found stabbed in the supper room ... with a little box of cocaine lying by his side.

As Coco is chiefly an actress on the radio, there are some fascinating looks at the very early days of the BBC here, and Poirot coming up against a snooty ... Read More:

A wonderful production starring the impeccable David Suchet as Poirot.

Poirot, along with Captain Hastings, visits a hotel in Devon which is set on an island, the only route on to the island being by sea tractor. Naturally he is soon ensconced in murder and intrigue.

A wonderful story - set on Burgh Island just off Bigbury on Sea, this is where Christie wrote Evil Under the Sun and Ten Little Indians whilst staying at the very same hotel.

Right. Well. THe first new Poirot in two years and it's based on one of my favourite Christie novels. So far so good. Unfortunately, the writers have once again felt the need to "improve" on the original source. They've all but removed the character of Nurse Letheran (the most interesting character in the novel other than Poirot himself) and given most of her lines to Hastings (who isn't actually in the original book). Some of the acting is a little dodgy too (the actor who plays Father Lavingy, for instance).

That said, it's not so much of a mess as it could have been. The team that ruined The Murder of Roger Achroyd two years ago haven't actually ruined this. Some of the performances (Doctor Leidner, Miss Johnson and, of course Poirot ... Read More:
