I watched the original Peter Ustinov version on TV many years ago and was looking forward to watching this film again, as I prefer David Suchet's version of "Poirot". The filming and costumes were excellent and the film captured the atmosphere of Egypt. However I found it all very disappointing because of weak acting by some of the lesser known cast.

The beginning of the film was not pacey or convincing enough to hold the attention and the love-triangle trio's acting was wooden and contrived. The mother and son scene in the hotel was over-played with Frances de la Tour desperately propping up her co-actor. After about thirty minutes, I could stand it no longer and fast-forwarded to about ten minutes from the end as I'd forgotten ... Read More:

DVD : Poirot - Agatha Christie's Poirot - The Hollow [1989]
It is way too predictable the way that they show who the murderer is ! It is just too dark & sad as a production . In the 1990's there would have been Hasting's there with Poirot having a nice weekend in rural England . The Police Inspector would have been James Japp of Scotland Yard & Miss Lemon would have been phoned and told to snoop around the dentist surgery for clues . The Hollow is just not good enough as a novel to be adapted for TV without certain liberties being taken with it and there is no point drowing the plot in a load of tiresome romantic dialogue half of which can be cut out without detracting from the murderers identity being discovered . The so called stars who 'act ' in this production just do not connect while Poirot seems like a marginal ... Read More:

"The little grey cells, I fear, they grow the rust," Hercule Poirot regretfully tells his friend Captain Hastings upon welcoming him back from a South American vacation. No case has kept him busy, nothing interesting has happened at all. Now that Hastings is back, however, things will be different again: "But it must be no common affair, Hastings. It must be something recherche. Delicate. Fine."

And just such a case is about to begin; in fact, it will turn out be one of Poirot's most difficult ever. Because at this point, he has already received the first of what will be an entire series of letters from an apparent serial killer, brazenly announcing his crimes and taunting Poirot to catch him. In fact, this is the very day the first murder is supposed to take place, ... Read More:

A nice little story with Hercule Poirot playing the continental dandy. The local aristocracy engaged in strange affairs and businesses suddenly trapped in their own snares by small little social climbers. It is all a question of money and doing as little as possible. It is not the doing nothing that is hard since for these people it is inscribed in their genes. But it is the money that gets rarefied, and that is not inscribed in their genes at all, that is the real problem that requires a fast and radical solution. Then the story is simple but the telling is magnificent. You are led into believing the obvious then into confessing your moronic mind because crime has little to do with the obvious, and then, etc. And in the end you are just dizzy when Monsieur Poirot finally tells ... Given how superb Pauline Moran , Philip Jackson and Hugh Fraser where in this fine TV movie as Miss Lemon , Chief Inspector Japp and Captain Hastings you have to wonder what possesed the producers & writers to exclude them from the series since 2003 ? By including these three fine artists as those ever popular characters the basic gist of the novel was perfectly conveyed while keeping a lighter touch that had been the hallmark of Poirot between 1989 & 2002 . The ratings figures for Poirot in that period prove that it was a winning formula to include Japp , Hastings & Miss Lemon even if they were not in the short story or novel concerned . David Suchet is brilliant as Poirot and it is really sad watching the great Belgain detective & his mates at the end of this one ... Read More:
