DVD : Scrooge
A real mixture in the musical version of "A Christmas Carol". Superb performances by Albert Finney, Alec Guinness, Edith Evans and, particularly, Kenneth More. The supporting actors are equally as good. Beautifully produced (it has a feeling of "Oliver" about it) with a somewhat mediocre score from Leslie Bricusse (with some notable exceptions). It does certainly bring "A Christmas Carol" to life and is well worth watching. A feel good movie.

now although i admit the film is confusing if you haven't played the game it's still a great film i watched it and i hadn't played the game and i pieced together most of it aprt from the characters my advice if you haven't played the game is to ignore the plot and focus on the action aside from that it's a complex intelligent beautiful action filled film i advise to watch

The Island is actually a remake of a 70's film I remember watching when I was wee called The Clonus Horror. It's a film that always stuck in my mind as one that deserved a multi-million dollar remake, especially now as the idea of cloning humans is no longer within the domain of science fiction but has become a real theoretical possibility. I thought, what a thought-provoking film it could be, the moral dilemma of "growing" clones of the cream of our society only to freeze them until such times as their original counterparts needed a healthy organ transplant. How very Dostoyevsky, how very Nietzsche.

For instance what if the next Einstein or Newton were to develop a heart condition and would otherwise die? Would it be morally acceptable ... Read More:

Yet another Tom Baker classic! (seriously, how many weren't?!!)
Strong horror element to this with a creepy atmosphere, and the planet itself is a TRIUMPH of set design; exotic and nightmarish, almost alive in itself!
The main monster, a creature made of anti matter is effective, and well rendered visually for the time (NOT a man in a rubber suit here!). Definiteley inspired by the Id monster from the SciFi classic, Forbidden Planet.
The acting is good with an interesting mix of characters, in the crew stationed on the planet. There are shades of Aliens/The Thing as the 'Evil' of the story picks the men off one by one.

One of my favs from long ago and well presented on DVD with some great features, especially re the set design.

Premise: Scott Calvin has been Santa Claus for the past eight years, and his loyal elves consider him the best Santa ever. But Santa's world is turned upside down when he's dealt a double whammy of bad news: not only has his son, Charlie, landed on this year's `naughty' list, but if Scott doesn't marry by Christmas Eve, he'll stop being Santa forever. Desperate, Scott turns to the elves' new invention - a machine that can replicate anything - to create Santa II and he leaves his double in charge. Things quickly go south at the North Pole when Santa II institutes some strange redefinitions of what's naughty and nice; worse, when Scott finally falls for a potential Mrs. Claus, she threatens to drive a wedge between him and Charlie. In a climactic battle pitting ... Read More:

I recall seeing these two films many years ago during their initial release, and being a Doctor Who fan, welcomed them in this 2 disc box set.

They are rather dated now, with cheap looking sets, exaggerated colour, and camp acting. But they are also a fond look back at the early years of Doctor Who, which by the time these films had been released the series had been broadcast by BBC Television since November 1963.

The first story based on the original transmission which was shown between December 1963 and February 1964 remains to this day one of the all time classic Doctor Who. The film version however, seems a rather rushed affair covering the basic storyline when the Doctor lands on the planet Skaro and finds an abandoned city. It isn't very ... Read More:

This wasn't a particularly amusing movie and I would say its strongest point was its special effects. The story lacked credibility and failed to draw me into the world the writers had tried to create. This was largely because Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith just didn't seem as scared of the aliens as I think people would be in real life ( particularly aliens this ugly and nasty)and there was no development of characters - their personalities were exactly the same at the end of the film as they were at the beginning.I'd heard a lot about Men In Black and I've gotta say that it is overrated and the 1980s film Ghostbusters with Bill Murray is funnier and way more interesting to watch.

This is an improvement on Series 7 for sure. A return to the original way of filming (in front of a studio audience) makes a huge difference. Chloe Annette is much more settled in her role and the return of Rimmer as a main character, and the original Holly also contributed to the vast improvement in this series. Red Dwarf has now been reconstructed by nanobots and the crew are basically back where they started. All Lister, Kochanski, Kryten and Cat have to do is explain it all to the newly resurected crew.

The original concept of the show - the last human being in the universe being stranded in outer space with a hologram, a creature evolved from his pet cat, a mechanoid and a senile compter - is lost and that's why I still don't think it quite makes the standard of the ... Read More:

A great film but looking its age with lots of 70's style over-the-top phychedelic effects. It's a good idea to read the book before watching the film though, it's very long on fancy effects but remarkably short on explanation. I've watched it many times and can honestly say that if I hadn't read the book first, I'd have little idea what on earth was going on.
