It was with a certain trepidation that I put this, my first blu-ray disk, into my new Panasonic blu-ray player. "2001: a space odyssey" has been my favourite film for as long as I can remember, and I've owned copies on a variety of VHS tapes and DVDs. The theme is just about as epic as it's possible to imagine: the evolution of man from ape through human to a completely new life form. It's a film which has sharply polarised views, with some people completely mystified or even bored by the presentation, whilst others are spellbound and deeply moved. Unsurprisingly, I am in the second category, and still find myself surprised that Kubrick managed to get a major motion picture company to finance such a bold and imaginative film. Read More:

According to the packaging and the trailer on Amazon, the widescreen ratio is 1:85. If so, it's not the full widescreen version and material is missing from each frame. The film was shot in 2.35 widescreen, and that's the width of frame that was used in the vhs release. If the picture has been cropped to 1:85 for this dvd release, then viewers are not getting the full impact of the impressive set designs which are so much a part of this film's success. Great sci-fi movie, and well worth a look, but fans are being shortchanged with the picture.

The show is even better than I remembered, but beware of the extras, some of them contain spoilers, so save them for the end of each season.

'The Empire Strikes Back', the second of the "old" Star Wars releases, is likely to be the darker of the collection, yet at the same time, the most accomplished in terms events. Their are many well shot scenes that are so cleverly edited, and the early fight scene on the snow planet between the rebels and the empire is superbly shot. It's only my opinion though, but I've always felt the ending shot of this film is incredibly weak. Not longer after Darth Vader has confessed his relationship with Luke, we're still in alot of tension and the atmosphere is quite mellow, yet in a matter of minutes, all this is turned around so we can have a shot of Luke, Leia, and the droids gazing out of their cruisers window with a big smile on their face, just to make a "happy ending". When I first saw this I thought the film was pretty silly, but now that I've seen it again I see why it's a true cult classic! Paul Verhoeven of Basic Instinct fame has a strange sense of humour. I love the fact that the film is set mainly in Buenos Aires, and the casting for this movie is perfect. All the actors are "robot-like" in appearance, like they've all had facelifts (they probably have). If you're tired and want a bit of mindless fun, this movie will do the trick.

imagine yourself in this place - and just think of how everybody belongs to a race or creed and just think of the interactions that take place - free food and bet you they have a free basic living set up as well - and the only thing you had to do - was to live? makes you think you don't want to be born for a couple of hundred of years - out of all the charecters sisko's son is the most i admire/dream/.... - he just persofies how life should be

So funny, I had to pause the DVD because I was laughing so hard, and I didn't want to miss a single second. It's true what they say at the end of Family Guy Blue Harvest, Robot Chicken: Star Wars is far better and funnier Star Wars spoof. Standout sketches for me were Admiral Ackbar's cereal advert ("It's a trap!"), the 'true story' behind the arm-severing at the Tattoine bar, and the final show piece 'Empire on Ice'. A must for all Star Wars and cutting-edge animation fans. Bring on the rest of the adult swim universe.

Il make this short and sweat, the best ep ever in the 45 yr run of doctor who amazing, a brill stroy line. Kylie as new comapnion Astrid is amazing and its a shame she was killed off in a heartbreakin scence of new who. Alot of people dont like this ep, dont listen to them RTD is such a great writer and it a shame he leaving, im a 15 year old boy and i loved this a 100% Buy Buy it now!!!

Anyone who is a fan of the timeless, majestic, Frank L.Baum classic 'The Wizard of Oz' should see this. Where the wonderful Musical 'Wicked' only undermines the positive feelings we have for 'Oz' - Tin man re-inforces just how good the original 70 year old (?) Classic film is. This remake combines disappointingly poor direction from Englishman Nick Willing, who seems completely divorced from the original story; an appaling script from Sickle & Mitchell (may namesake!); and a completely cardboard lead from Zooey Deschanel supported by a convincingly awful Allan Cumming - who proves once and for all his Tony's are about being in the right place at the right time.
