DVD : Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story [2007]
This documentary premiered on US TV this summer (07) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the label which rode the wave that was Soul, the soundtrack to the struggle for Civil Rights. From it's beginnings in a old cinema on McLemore Avenue in Memphis, through it's golden era(s), the story of Stax is the story of the rise and fall of Soul as the dominant musical genre, to the point where disco took over.

The influence exerted by Soul though is still felt today, and the music has never been allowed to die by those who love it. In 2007 the label has been reborn, with re-releases and new material, and the 50th anniversary is a great excuse for this documentary, to celebrate the part the music played in influencing change in the 60's ... Suzanne Vega was one of the finest narrative voices of 80s and 90s contemporary music. But this collection of promotional videos adds nothing to the songs, and, quite often, is little better than a visual distraction. In some cases, such as Tom's Diner, the minimalism of the video production is in keeping with the minimalism of the song. In other cases, though, the style of the video is at odds with the song, or seems to reference an entirely different world.
Probably the exception to this is the 'In Liverpool', which brings more drama and storyline, and is beautifully, if a touch whimsically, shot.
Ultimately, though, I would only recommend this video if you are going for a complete collection of all Suzane Vega's works.

DVD : Dar Williams: Live at Bearsville Theater [2007] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Having seen Dar live a few times here in the UK I really enjoyed seeing her perform at Woodstock. I have to admit I prefer Dar solo and so the first half of the concert suited me better. I was glad she sang my favourite song by her 'Iowa' (excellent live when the audience join in the chorus) but was disappointed she didn't do my other favourite song 'Family'. However,I feel some of her songs are a bit too long winded and I think the audience may have got a bit bored at their length. I do enjoy her between-song banter so have no complaints there. Other songs I like by her include 'The One Who Knows''The Beauty Of The Rain' and 'Mercy Of The Fallen' so I was pleased that she included them. Her one outside song 'Ripple'went down well as the audience ... Read More:
