DVD : Revolt of the Zombies [1936]
Well, first off, if you're checking out Revolt of the Zombies as some very early Night of the Living Dead (1968)-type film, forget it. This is about "zombies" in a more psychological sense, where that term merely denotes someone who is not in control of their will, but who must instead follow the will of another. The "zombies" here, as little as they are in the film, are largely metaphors for subservience to the state or authority in general, as in wartime. It is quite a stretch to call this a horror film.

The film is set during World War I. A "French Cambodian" contingent had heard strange stories about zombification--supposedly Angkor Wat was built by utilizing zombies--and there are tales of zombie armies easily overcoming foes. ... Read More:

DVD : Zombie 5: Killing Birds [1987] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
The film opens with a man returning home from Vietnam only to discover his slut wife in bed with another man. He then kills them both and any other people around before being attacked by birds. Years later students trying to record sightings of a rare bird arrive at the house of a blind man who was the last person who saw it! He directs them to a derelict house where they set up for the night...
Directed by Claudio Lattanzi and finished off by Joe D'amato this is mostly quite a dull film. The opening sequence with the Vietnam vet returning home and pretty much killing everyone is alright as it contains some gore. However, from then on it's mostly boring and Robert Vaughn is truly terrible as the blind bird expert who just seems to endlessly ... Read More:

DVD : Day of the Dead [1986]
Anchor bay have always been a good label but now the foray into the world of HD for them on blu ray. Day of the dead is one of the first releases on the labels initial hd output and its a welcome treat.

Don't be expecting a transfer akin to the blockbusters of the last couple of years as this is a 20 yr old low budget horror but this is a nice upgrade ove r the standard dvd.

As you would expect the daytime scenes look the best, depth to the image is noticably better as are the colours. The bunker scenes come off the worse but still lokk better than dvd. The tunnel sequence near the end looked alot better..blacks were rock solid..my old dvd had a washed out black look but here looks fab.

Great film and decent if not ... Read More:

DVD : Flesh for the Beast [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This movie proves that gore alone does not satisfy, especially when the gore is as bland and unsatisfying as that found in this first release from the guys at Media Blasters and Shriek Show. The box this film comes in isn't bad, though; it actually makes the movie sound promising to a gore-hound such as me. The selection of extra features included on the DVD also led me to believe that the movie was one I could sink my teeth into, quenching a little of my perpetual thirst for horror in the process. Unfortunately, things go downhill quickly as soon as you open the box. Director Terry West seems proud of this movie, and that makes me feel a pang of guilt when I declare Flesh For the Beast one of the most boring, bland, uninteresting horror films I've ever seen. ...
