DVD : Redneck Zombies [1988]
When some rednecks use a radioactive drum as a still for hooch they and everyone who drinks it turn into meat tearing zombies.

Average but fun is the best description of this movie. Some of the gore is great fun, just bang the animal entrails and blood around the place and hope for the best. These guys are obviously horror fans and it shows.

Some of the humour is okay but most of it is awfull! As is the incredibly dodgy acting and editing and the usual stereotypical characters (The guy whos permantely drunk and the black crazy who pretends to be a zombie are my favs).Watch the end cabin scene, its great fun!.

Anchor bay have always been a good label but now the foray into the world of HD for them on blu ray. Day of the dead is one of the first releases on the labels initial hd output and its a welcome treat.

Don't be expecting a transfer akin to the blockbusters of the last couple of years as this is a 20 yr old low budget horror but this is a nice upgrade ove r the standard dvd.

As you would expect the daytime scenes look the best, depth to the image is noticably better as are the colours. The bunker scenes come off the worse but still lokk better than dvd. The tunnel sequence near the end looked alot better..blacks were rock solid..my old dvd had a washed out black look but here looks fab.

Great film and decent if ... Read More:

released in 1981 to a limited success,it was only after 1984 when this was declared a video nastie, that people wanted to see this film,it was released again thereafter but censored, and now with this lovely looking two disc version, that problem has been sorted, for this is now the uncut version and thats cause for celebration!,but is the film actually any good?mainly yes,but this isnt an out and out classic by any means.
The gore scenes that we like to talk about are very good indeed, they dont stay on screen for long but they linger in the mind, the storyline is solid enough and the twist at the end is good, although i seen it coming but not from a mile off.
The problem lies with a sluggish pace at times and a sense of repeating itself until it ... Read More:

The story's skin and bones, the acting is terrible, and the whole thing is shot with a Super-8mm camera but, bless young J.R. Bookwalter's dark little heart, there's blood and gore at every turn of this low-budget zombie film from 1989 (newly remastered in 2005). The Dead Next Door really was Bookwalter's brainchild, as he wrote, directed, and appeared in the film - all at the tender age of nineteen. Of course, this movie would never have been made without the help of Sam Raimi, who helped finance the project and, under the pseudonym "The Master Cylinder," produced it. The Raimi factor is rather obvious - e.g., you have characters named Raimi, Savini (after Tom Savini), and Carpenter (after John Carpenter); you have some characters watching Evil Dead on television ... I love this film, it shouldn't really be compared to the original as it is it's own film and should be considered in that respect.
The first scenes of zombie action are amazing, they are quite shocking and just consider how you would react to witnessing this sort of thing going on!
I never get tired of watching this film and after seeing it several times on tv I finally got around to buying the dvd and was impressed with the extras included, if you are a fan there is plenty on there to keep things interesting.

It's a pity that others in the series such as Land of the Dead were such a terrible disappointment!

I *really* enjoyed this film but it isn't for the squemish! It kept me glued to the screen and up for most of the night, mainly because I was scared witless! It isn't the most up to date with all the fantastic special effects that you see in more recent horrors, but it was still realistic enough to be (just about!) believable....well as far as horror films are anyway! If you're a fan of the gory, teen horror flics....you'll probably like this.
