I got my 1tb My Book on Monday, it lasted a whole day and then started smelling of burnt electronics. Contacted Amazon, they were excellent and sent me a replacement Thursday, started it up, backed up some files. Got home backed up some more files from home pc then suddenly it died. It lasted 8 hours. Thankfully Amazon seem really good about replacing dodgy products but why stock them in the first place.

I have noticed very few mac reviews for this drive so here goes. Luckily mac uses Fat32 so no need to reformat the drive to NTFS. The drive comes preloaded with the Turbo USB program for Mac, let me say this is a godsend. I am able to transfer over 70GB from one external drive to the new Buffalo in about 30 minutes, that is fast. The drive makes the usual little noises that external drives make but nothing that would distract you in any way. The drive is well designed visually and looks good with my Macbook. The powere on/off feature is great, as I all I have to do the turn it on is plug it into a usb port, and to turn off just eject the drive from my mac. Overall the drive offers great transfer speeds, looks, and fantastic value!

I owned the old version of this in a 250GB but had filled it up so was pleasantly suprised to see that they had updated the look of the product, looks like my PS3 however that really wasn't that important, the thing which grabbed me was the power usage, 75% less than a standard drive they use some new fangled technology which allows the drive to go into a park mode when not searching for information which means it is not running burning my cash. Also pleased to see that they included free back up software and encryption to give an element off added value. From a technical point of view the transfer rates are excellent, I transfered the contents of my Laptops hardrive 80GB in under an hour using a standard USB cable from the box. Bought this device just over 6 months ago and it worked brilliantly, data transferred quickily and easily and then one day I booted up my pc and discovered this drive was not showing, went through all the logical procedures, checked the cables were properly connected and checked the fuse... I even tried connecting it to a different computer but still nothing! Fortunately Western Digital accepted that it was still under warranty and have agreed to check it and if necessary replace it, but with a warning that if they do replace it they will not recover any data. They do however recommend a few companies for data recovery and I sent the drive to one of them, they reported that the drive had suffered extreme electrical damage, presumably due to the fact that the only ... I have had this drive for about a week now and it seems to work really well. I paid £60 which seems good value but it's now a bit cheaper. It comes formatted as FAT32 so it's compatible with more systems, but I have reformatted it as EXT3 as I use Ubuntu (Linux) rather than Windows. (I could have used NTFS if I wanted to use it with both operating systems). I like the silicon plastic bits that protect each end of the disk and stop it sliding around on my glass top desk. It powers up and down automatically when I switch my laptop on and off which is handy. I have not tested how it copes with being accidentally switched off or unplugged while in use!

excellent external hard drive , i was going to purchase the 250gb , but i opted for this 500gb just £7.00 price difference between both of them .. i take hundreds , thousands of photos and over time i have lost hundreds / thousands of them . so finally after 4 years i bought a external harddrive , the price of this is just super and the capacity is just big .. this hard drive should hopefully last years .. great piece of kit , if you want to save you computers hard drive from getting clogged up with hundreds of pictures/documents & songs , its so easy to install and so easy to use & very well built and it comes with a super 2 years warranty .. see u ..

Arrived next day but when opened the first thing that fell out was a return slip and receipt from another customer! Needless to say the drive didn't work and is now on it's way back, which is a shame as I really needed it today and will now have to wait for a hopefully better replacment. The 1 Star is for Amazon in this case and not the product, which I'm still going to try. I will review again in a few weeks after I have used the drive. Come on Amazon, I expected better than this and feel let down by your Quality Control procedures.
