I looked at a lot of reviews for this (on Amazon and elsewhere) and plumped for this drive because of its excellent connectivity. I'm a Mac user and Apple seem to be moving away from Firewire towards USB so I wanted to ensure the best of both Worlds. My G5 Mac has Firewire 400 and 800 and I wanted to try the Firewire 800 speed. It is very fast. I copied 160GB in around 2 hours.

The drive itself is small, neat and very quiet; a few clicks here and there but nothing too noticeable, The lights are a bit distracting if the drive is in use a lot like mine but I put it out of direct view and it is fine. The usage guage is useful but the included software on the drive has a drive capacity monitor built in which is more accurate.

I bough this product a week ago. I am using it on Mac.

Installation was quick and painless as there wasn't any. I simply plugged in the USB and it worked. I re-formatted the drive in Mac OS Extended format and am using it as a back-up drive. Mac Time Machine took maybe an hour to back-up 50GB of data, very impressive speed.

The only downside so far: the drive is a bit noisy. To be clear: this is not the read/write noise, but it simply the noise of either the drive spinning or there may be a fan inside the casing. Either way, I can hear the drive quite clearly when it sits on my desk.

I have had a smaller Freecom drive before that didn't make any noise whatsoever.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5.

I've had this drive for about 4 months and I am just starting to get very serious IO errors. The drive is clicking away on certain sectors, which are now unrecoverable. the data is lost.

These drives *might* be ok if you leave them in one place and don't ever touch them. But don't ever try to move them. They seem to be extremely fragile. Don't trust your data to them.

I got the My Book to do a back up of my Mac. I plugged it in and it linked up fine and started doing a backup faultlessly. The next evening it was making a little more noise than normal and I realised it was no longer in communication with the Mac.
I phoned the Western Digital help desk 3 times. They were helpful but they could have made their instructions a little easier to follow. On the third phone call they did admit there didn't seem to be anything they could do, particularly as the Mac remained out of contact with the My Book. So off the disc went back to Amazons suppliers with everything my Mac contained aboard. The next day I spent several hours changing passwords with all those companies on the web that I visited. Definitely not reliable.

I've had this product for 1.5 years and I have found it an incredible product. It transfers data quickly, I don't actually find it that noisy, if you're actually trying to listen to it then you might find it loud but I forget about it after a while. As for the flickering light, I know it's always flickering however you ignore it after a while.

It's a great product and hasn't been a problem at all, never broke or crashed.

I am a professional photographer and I needed a portable hardrive to be able to store and carry work easily between home and the studio, so I wanted something that wouldn't die on me within a couple of weeks of using it.

Western Digital makes various versions of the passport HD and choosing can be a bit confusing. My Passport Studio is for a few reasons the most suitable for this kind of use. It can be confusing to see on WD website another version which might seem superior to the Studio but it's not. Just for one reason alone Studio is best, Elite has only USB connectivity whereas Studio has both USB and FireWire.

A few other things I like about this portable hardrive is the size, small and thing, the metallic enclosure which supposedly is shock absorbent (just ... Read More:

I bought this drive a few weeks/months ago and I am very glad I did.
I use it on a MacBook (white, bought early 2008) and the drive connects on a FireWire 400 (pretty much as fast as a USB2.0). This feature is great for leaving USB ports free as the MacBook only has two.
The drive is tiny, I can barely hear it (it might stand out in a complete silent room, not even sure).
The firewire cable is a bit stiff and short, so it can be tricky to move the disk around, but I would not remove a star for this.

All together, that's a great device and I hope it lasts. I already have a WD desktop hard drive bought two years ago and it has not failed me once.
