Quite simply the best value for money Canon prime lens you can buy!
Amazing quality photos in low light conditions - great for portraits.
As countless others have noted, the only negative is the cheap build quality, but then any lens needs to be cared for! Used with care produces great results, full stop.

This is the natural partner for the 18-55 lens that came as kit with the body.
The lens is not actually 100% plastic as most of the people states, it is in part made by plastic, but the part that attacches to the camera body is painted alluminium, it looks and weights like plastic but is metal!
The IS is amazing, and the lens very sharp, even at 250mm... once attached to your body, the only limit is your creativity.
this is the best zoom lens around for a cheap budget if you own as EOS camera.

Best Lens 195 pounds can buy.

This lense feels well built and is compact enough to fit into almost any kit bag.

It performs well when used for portrait work and is a worthwhile purchase for that use, although it has limited application for anything else.

For the price, give it a go, you will produce enough good shots to make it well worth the investment.

I do not know how Amazon allow this sort of thing to happen but at least half of these reviews relate to lenses other than the one featured.

I use this lens with an EOS450D and the results are really exceeding my expectations. I have used the lens in a wide variety of conditions and have yet to find reason to complain about anything of substance. It is simple to use in automatic mode, and there are two image stabilisation modes which enable you to take photographs using this lens without having to resort to a tripod.

Canon have to be congratulated on producing a very fine lens with an excellent range, and Amazon need to be congratulated on their price (circa £350) for this great piece of photographic kit.

I am using this Nikon 50mm f/1.4D lens with my Nikon D40. Due to the lack of a focus motor on the body this lens is manual focus only, but otherwise works fine (Metering etc.). Nikon have recently released a f/1.4G model of this lens which will auto-focus on the D40/D60 and should be available around Nov-Dec 2008. Manual focus doesn't bother me so I purchased this lens rather than waiting.

Due to the cropped DX sensor on the D40, this 50mm prime gives approx. 75mm coverage, making it suitable for portraits but makes it a little tricky to get a good shot in a confined room.
As such, I contemplated getting the Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC HSM Digital Lens For Nikon Mount in order to get a bit of a wider angle, but decided against due to its weight (430g, as opposed ... Read More:

I'm very impressed with this lens. Before I bought it, I read reviews on various websites, some saying it was brilliant, some saying it wasn't very sharp, too big, too heavy etc.I took the plunge and bought one and haven't regretted it. I've used this on d40 and d300 bodies and it works superbly on both.

The autofocus is very fast, quiet and accurate. The VRII system is also very impressive allowing very slow shutter speeds - I've had sharp, handheld images at 1/30 sec at 300mm which would be completely impossible without it. As for the size and weight, for a lens with a maximum focal length of 300mm with a built in focusing motor and an optical stabilisation system it's not really a problem (the canon equivalent is the same size but 100g lighter). The build is ... Read More:

I have had the lens for a couple of months and yet to find a problem with it. It is durable, solid and gets loads of detail for your shots.

I would recommend buying a decent filter to use with it.

I own this lens since a month now and I can only say "waouh..." I've never use so wide a lens before (28mm was the lowest I've used before) but it's a revelation. I corroborate previous comments, the lens is sharp at all apertures, there is almost no barrel distorsion even at 10mm wide open. It was perfect for snow pictures a couple of weeks ago.

Only downsize is the lack of a hood as commented previously and if you want to use a UV filter you need a slim one wich add to the cost. And if you want a polariser it's even worse.

I bought one of these from a well known auction site for about £80. It's a good all rounder and gives me a bit more scope than my nifty fifty EF-50mm. I've produced some really good photos from it with great colour and detail. Agree with other reviewers about it excelling when it's stopped down, it does take a while to figure out how to get the best from it. Generally very happy with this lens.
