1.Canon BP-511A Battery Pack from: Canon

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Electronics : Canon BP-511A Battery Pack
Off The Bookshelf's Price: £41.71

I bought a spare one of these for my 5D.

It's rated at 1390 mAh and 7.4V. As it's an official Canon product it won't invalidate your warranty if that's a consideration.

These battery packs give a very high number of shots and I feel confident with two of these fully charged I can shoot all day, review photos to my heart's content and use battery draining IS lenses without worry. In fact I've only had to change batteries on one occasion and by that time I'd had enough anyway! I think they are rated to give around 800 shots.

Highly recommended.

4.Canon BG-E2N Battery Grip For EOS 20D, 30D & 40D from: Canon

I got this grip to fit onto my 40D purchased at the same time. Previously I had a 20D with the earlier BG-E2 grip and had nothing but problems with that grip on that body. Power would suddenly fail without warning often in the middle of a burst and meant I lost shots. It would do this seemingly at random so could never predict it happening. The only way to clear the fault was to remove the batteries and grip from the body, leave for a few miniutes then replace it. Some days it would behave, on others it happened up to half a dozen times. Because of the fault it meant I had to constantly keep removing and reattaching it and this eventualy led to it getting stuck half removed from the camera due to the gears inside seizing up. It cost me £80 ... Read More:

5.Canon 580EX II Speedlite Flash Unit from: Canon

I bought the 580EX Mk II Speedlite to use it on a Canon EOS-1V film SLR or EOS 30D D-SLR cameras. I found the user manual to be very basic which is rather a pity.

This Speedlite can be used in full auto or full manual flash modes and it works seamlessly when fitted directly to the accessory shoe (hot shoe) on either camera and I assume if an extension cable is used.

The ETTL metering used in the 1V and the ETTLII metering used in the 30D camera work perfectly.

The 580EX Mk II can be used as a powerful flashgun when fitted directly to the camera's accessory shoe and bouncing the light off a wall or ceiling.

You can also set it as a slave unit and trigger it with the optional ST-E2 Wireless Unit. ... Read More:

You absolutely do need a second battery for your camera if you are at all serious about photography. I bought the Canon Ixus 500 and this battery as a spare. I wouldn't be without it.

Basically its essential. This one (identical to the one supplied with the camera) is reliable, fast to charge, and lasts a couple of days (or 100 or so photos) in my experience.

Its not exciting, but it is worth the 30 quid or so.

I have to agree with the other poster. I have previously purchased much cheaper so-called replacement NB-3L batteries which have not even fitted my Ixus, as they were so badly made. The Canon batteries might seem over-priced, but they work and won't invalidate your warranty. Don't waste money on cheap batteries which might damage your camera.

Expensive, so 3*. And I paid £61 from Amazon - now its over £80, so I'd give it 2* for value.

What I was not expecting is that this battery sticks out the back of your lovelly camera - about 12mm - not disastrous, but not great. And its heavy - double the weight of the BP809 your camera comes with. Maybe that was expected, but you do feel the difference because the HF100 is so light.

At £61, you might still consider it better than the BP809, but at £80 I'd say buy a BP809 in silver (or black) and consider if you need a third one of those. Only when you are going to be all day at a theme park/airshow might you need three batteries worth - but then that's why I bought it.

However expesnice you consider these to be, beware:-

This is a canon battery charger. I'll admit, its not the most interesting thing in anybody's life but it is useful; especially if like me, your ex-girlfriend nicked your charger... and lets face it if you have such a pretty canon camera you can't go offending it by buying one of those cheapo generic chargers.
