I've owned my Canon 1000D for about 3 weeks now and have given it a reasonable test drive. The one thing that strikes me most is the ease at which I can find my way around the camera instantly to find the correct settings (very intuitive). The Camera noise is non-exsistant at ISO 800 and ISO 1600,(outstanding). The EOS 1000D is very similar in shape and style to the 450D, it even shares the exact same "LIVE VIEW" technology, all the button's are the same, layout the same, just the 1000D sports a 10mp Sensor and the 450D a 12mp Sensor. I so far have only used the 18-55mm image stabilized kit lens, and am very satisfied with the results, the 1000D Kit lens construction and optics are far superior to the kit lens supplied with the Canon ... Decided to upgrade my wonderful eod400d and lenses. After reading quite a lot about it, I had decided against the 450d and would go for the 40d instead. However, after reading about this camera, I could not resist..... it was quite a lot more, but decided that I could buy this one and not need another camera for many years. If you do not already have good lenses, the starter kit with the 17-85 USM IS lens, good value combination. Only disadvantages compared to a lesser lens and the 400d is the size and weight, however feels much more stable and well built. Now down the the picture quality...... all I can say is AMAZING! Even in low light (a common eos flaw) this camera took great shots without the flash, crystal clear..... only had it a day or so, but ... Read More:

The other reviews accurately set out all the good points. I am balancing the scales with some of the problems I experienced with my Canon 5D which are replicated with the Canon 40D and why I sold my Canon and bought a Sony A700: 1. Weight - it is pretty heavy for a non-pro camera. With a decent lens this is not the sort of camera you will be grateful for carrying around all day in the tropics on holiday! The A700 is a couple of hundred grams lighter which makes a difference. 2. Ergonomics - this is a personal matter and for me very important. Most modern cameras are capable of taking a nice picture whether it's a Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus etc. It's how it feels in the hand and in use that really matters. This has the same ... I decided to get back into photography with an SLR, and did quite a lot of research. This lead me to buy this camera and lens (as well as a 70-300 zoom). This camera is a superb entry level camera, with preset picture style types such as portrait, landscape, sports etc. and a fully auto setting, so as easy to use as a point and shoot. For the more professional photographers amongst you, there are the manual setting options where you can adjust the ISO, aperture etc. and a fully manual option. The basic 18-55 lens will be fine when you are getting used to the camera, however the lenses will be the first thing you upgrade if you fall in love with photography! I recommend the USM IS range of lenses as reasonable priced good quality upgrades.

I think this is an excellent camera - at least judging by its description. I have had to send two of them back as the CMOS chip was damaged, and individual pixels were broken. Maybe this whole batch is faulty - definitely something Amazon should look into. I am trying again - third time lucky... :)
