Now this looks a very smart camcorder as was pleased when opened the box. Very confusing though when you try to get it started. Cannot register it either. When trying to register it with the disc it will only register it if you live in the states (although purchased on Amazon UK). So i tried online and that will still not register either. Filming was good though which we bought specifically for our new addition to the family. Recorded a whole dvd's worth. Could not get the disc out to use it for a friends wedding though. When finally it decided to eject i took it out and then put it back in the camcorder (for some reason i really don't know why i did) and it formatted it without me even touching it. Not good with a little one around. ... Read More:

This is a beautiful camera. It feels surprisingly solid for such a small object. Video images taken with this camera is superb but because the camera is so small that without supporting it against something solid you get quite a shaky image if you zoom in. The 4 megapixel still images are not good enough to produce a 10x8 print from it - which is a shame because the rotatable flip screen is ideal for composing candid photos and taking image from high and low angles. This also means carrying 2 cameras if you want to combine taking stills and video. If you buy this camera, I suggest you carry a spare battery with you as you might find you run out of power just in the middle of taking Spielberg beating footage

Having had a number of video cameras in the past, I am more than pleased with the HDR-SR12E. One reviewer complains about the quality of the stills, but for a video camera I think they are more than acceptable. Yes, the frame grabs are only about 800 to 900kb in file size, but in photo mode they are around 3mb.........perfectly adequate for holiday snaps to print at 5" X 7".

On the downside, its a nuisance having to select fade-in/out every time you use it.......my old Panasonic VHS-C camera of twenty years ago was better in that way! Also, with a camera of this value one would expect Sony to supply the full manual in booklet form rather than on cd!

I'm giving it 4 stars........a couple of quibbles in the previous paragraph, ... Read More:

Straight out of the box you quickly see you have a stylish and high quality HD camcorder. I have not yet bought an HD TV but wanted to use the latest HD technology when capturing Christmas, days out and birthdays. As detailed in the manual the camcorder easily connects to any TV over scart or RBG and scales down the output for 'normal' TVs.

Capturing recordings to the hard drive is as a one click operation. The 15x optical zoom is smooth and the LCD shows the recording in a crisp and clear window.

Transferring the HD files to a PC or laptop is easy with the free Sony Picture Motion Browser software, just install the software and connect the Sony docking station to the USB cable and connect to a free USB port on your PC. The software ... Read More:

I purchased this camera in March 2008 and have used it on a number of occasions and am extremely dissappointed with the results. It is almost impossible to take steady shots, shake is very noticable even though the steady shot is activated. The microphone picks up creaks from the plastic casing and also when activating the zoom button, the microphone is also sensitive to wind noise even the silghtest breeze sounds like a gale blowing. Auto focus can be very tempremental and you can find your pictures losing focus for no obvious reason. The software does not allow you to edit your shots together other than in the order they were taken. I feel this camera has been a total waste of money and I am now actively seeking a replacement, I have been told that HD Cameras pictures are not very ... Read More:

After lots of research I settled on the SR55. The reasons for this were

1. Sony products are normally good quality.
2. 40gb hard drive meant I didn't have to carry lots of DVDs as with other camcorders.
3. Small size meaning easy to carry round on holiday.
4. Not overly priced.

What I have found about this camcorder so far is that it is very easy to set up and use. A novice could easily pick this up and be fully conversant within an hour. The docking station is very effective when connecting to a PC and/or TV. I personally have the station attached to my TV and PC together meaning I can connect to either one at the touch of a button. The software included was easy to install and use and the one touch disc burn is very handy. The file formats ... Read More:

It arrived. We videoed. It didn't connect to our Mac iBook.

Tried both USB and Firewire but nothing shows up on the computer screen. The software provided only works with Windows. The Operating Guide manual small print says you can only use it for stills but doesn't state categorically that you can't transfer videos from the camera to a Mac. If this is the case then Sony should make this apparent. Mentioning Mac compatibility but not saying it only means the stills facility (I already have a digital camera) is misleading. If there is a way to transfer then the Guide needs to be a lot clearer.

As this is quite basic mini-dv technology, how come this generation of cameras isn't Mac compatible like the old JVC mini-dv we had?

Very disappointed.

i only recieved my camcorder yesterday and i already know how to use all of its functions. i was looking at buying this or the dcr-sr210 but im glad i saved myself the extra £100 by getting this one. both the sound and picture quality is exellent and for a 1 meg still shot the result is impressive. the only negative thing is the software included, i installed it then uninstalled it an hour later, its rubbish. i found that windows movie maker is much more user friendly. battery included is a little poor but i dont think any camara comes with a good one. all in all exellent value for money

This is a brilliant camera, easy to use, touch screen controls and menus which are easy to use. I charged it straight out of the box and 2 hours later it was fully charged and ready to shoot. the night shot seems a bit weak, and can only focus short distances, so if you want to do 'most haunted' style shots of your face, it works great, if you want to film a hedgehog in your garden though, you have no hope from a distance, as the infra-red 'light' doesn't illuminate far and the camera just records a fuzzy blur.
there are a whole load of options for which quality you want to record in, so you can choose to record in the best quality possible, or elongate the life of your memory card by shooting in a lower quality. I've yet to hook it up to the tv to compare the differences in picture quality, ... Read More:
