1.XFX 8400GS 256MB nVidia PCI Express Graphics Card from: XFX Nvidia

Electronics : XFX 8400GS 256MB nVidia PCI Express Graphics Card
It was easy to get started. Just installed the card in the computer, turned on, and then windows detected it and asked for the drivers. So I put the disc in and away we went.

I can now get the definition that my screen recommends, and we seem to zip along a lot faster than when the graphics were on the motherboard.

I don't notice the fan particularly, but then my (much lower spec) old computer had a graphics card with a fan, so I guess I am used to it. It's not loud.

There is a known issue with this and other XFX cards, the cooler fan does not switch down and runs at a constant 100% thus sounding like a 7freaking47 inside the PC case. You'll have to go through a lot of trouble with XFX to fix it or hope like I do Amazon will honour the returns policy.

I've had a Nvidia 6200 and a 7300se on the same computer.I was looking for a new generation video card. After discovering that the 8600 and above graphic cards won't work with my computer because of power issues. I went with this one. Despite reading other reviews, this card is superb. I'm now playing games on max resolution (1280x1024) on max graphics. I don't know what the 512mb version is like, but I'm well happy for the price with this one. Some people might tell you that they don't understand why people buy a 1gb instead of a 512mb. I find that because programmes now draw less on my computer memory, its like having a new machine.
So unless you have a brand new top of the range computer with massive amounts of memory, and loads of money to buy ... Read More:

I bought this card thinking it would fit into my reasonably large case, but when I tried to put it in, it was just too big so am now trying to send it back and go for a smaller 8600.

This unit takes up 2 slots and is about 1.5 inches thick and a length of 220mm as stated in a previous review.
My Machine isn't small but it still didn't fit. I am not prepared to but a new motherboard and case, so am rather disapointed.

But anyway let that be warning to people like myself who aren't into the hardware, as much as the software.

The only way I can see this thing being put into a machine is if you custom build your own!
