The quality of scanning is appalling. Save the money and take your slides to a shop and have them scanned. I bought this to scan old family slides for my Dad. I was really looking forward to receiving it and was extremely disapointed by the results. I am sending it back, it is not fit for purpose. The only good thing about it is the packaging.

I received my 4400f very fast, Thank you Amazon. but,,, I am having trouble trying to use the Clone tool. After scanning the document I click on the clone window, and try to use it, Then a small window keeps popping up saying, "please shift + click," I have tried shifting,, left mouse clicking, every thing possible, but that window pops up every time I click my mouse, I even re-loaded the whole programme again as per the book, Please help, Regards,,,,, George,,

This is excellent value for money. After a few hours fiddling with it to try and get it to work (the instructions were'nt very good)I got it working.
I have spent hours and hours sorting through hundreds of old 35mm negatives of my wonderful mum and dad who are both now gone. I now have them both captured forever on disc. I'm just sorry I can't show them, they would love it.

By editing the photos on screen, some of them are clearer than the original photos.

Good value for money, recommeded.

I'm really impressed with this scanner but, as a Mac user, was extremely disappointed by the software Canon supply with it - some seriously old editions of ArcSoft PhotoStudio and OmniPage SE, both of which are PowerPC editions. They are so old that the suppliers won't offer any support; upgrading to newer versions costs over £110. I got rid of my old HP scanner because their software support was so poor and now find myself in the same situation with Canon. It's a real shame, but this cheapens the product - beautifully made, but with ancient software.

5.Canon Lide 25 Colour Flatbed Scanner from: Canon

I bought an earlier version of this scanner in (I think) 2000. The current version is the same size, makes the same amount of noise, has the same speed and costs the same. No progress in eight years...

Nonetheless, the software has been improved a lot and this results in higher quality pictures at smaller file sizes. Good stuff.

Overall this is a solid scanner, it was worked flawlessly over the last few months and its predecessor is still working (on XP).

My score: 4 out of 5

Plustek OpticFilm 7200 Film Scanner

My system crashed when I loaded the SilverFast SE image handling software supplied with the 7200 scanner. The scanner operated correctly until the end of the preview scan when the system also crashed with the same error report. I have an HP Scanjet 6200C flatbed scanner as well.
Despite the promised reply in 24 hours, PlusTek UK needed two emails and a phone call before I obtained any advice which then came from Germany. This was "There is conflict between HP and Film scanner. Please un install or de active (go to device manager to de active HP) HP install only plustek film scanner". I had already stated that I had deactivated the HP scanner.
A further request for help resulted in replacement software ... Read More:

Horrendous. After about 10 restarts, for no apparent reason the neg loader starts to work. I wish it hadn't. Slow isn't the word. Grindingly slow barely starts to get there. Agonising, maybe.

After a couple of strips of C41 (nearly an hour), the third came out with images bisected by black bars - it had lost the frame marker.

A less competent, slower machine would be almost inconceivable.

One star, only because you can't give it no stars.

Well a question not a comment. How do you think this would work on small (old) photos, small negs etc.? I am fed up buying things said to do what I need them to do, only to find that they don't! I have photos from 1940's that are no way standard and something like this might just do the trick, even if it wasn't exactly designed for it.

Using with a Mac PC running OSX 10.5.2 I found this to be excellent and far in front of others at the price. I have now scanned some 1,000 slides using the simple preview method at 600 DPI and am fully satisfied.
A special few of my slides had been transferred from the old 2 1/4" square transparencies taken in 1948 and were in very bad condition. The Plustek and software dealt with all the rough stuff and a tweak with Photoshop and they were amazing.
I damaged the install disc and received a new one from Germany in 3 days free of charge. So excellent after sales too.

I spent a lot of time searching the web for a scanner specifically for negatives. The older models from plustek got good reviews, and Amazon seemed the obvious choice as they Amazon have never let me down. I must admit to being nervous about ordering electronic goods via the web, but the scanner arrived in one piece. Top marks also to plustek when my adaptor failed, and when I contacted the customer support they promptly sent a new one.

The scanner itself? It works a dream, the software does take some time to get used to but compensates really nicely for scratches and dust. I also had some light damaged negatives which gave reddish tints in the uncorrected prints. The colour correction was able to remove this effect very nicely. I also scanned in some very old slides, ... Read More:
