First signs were good, tuned in easily, picked up plenty of DAB stations and FM transmission good, then I drove off, keeps cutting out, just not enough signal strength on my commute (M/A27 Southampton to Chichester). Shame as when there is a signal it sounds really good but cutting out as often and for as long as it does renders it almost useless. I will be contacting Amazon with a view to returning it for a refund.

Trawled through loads of reviews before settling on this one, I was thinking more expensive would be best but the over £200 navs all have such mixed reviews I decided to try my luck with one that didn't have any. I'd borrowed a Garmin previously so when I got my tom tom out of the box and saw the screen size is smaller I was a bit worried but I've used it loads and it hasn't been a problem at all. Also the Garmin I'd borrowed took ages to lock onto the satellites but my TT has always locked on immediately so really pleased. I havn't tried out the places of interest options but I did have fun testing all the different accents you can choose! Functional - BUT made of very cheap looking smooth black plastic. No wonder only the internal view is being shown in the Amazon photographs. Disappointing appearance. However, as it WAS cheap, maybe I shouldn't have expected a better looking bag. On the other hand, it was delivered very quickly and has arrived before the DVD player I ordered at the same time from Amazon.

The navigation is excellent, made better by updates shared by other users (Mapshare). It is very easy to use. However - The battery life is nowhere near 3 to 5 hours (as TomTom claims). 2 hours 30 mins is nearer the mark. The hands- free telephone operation is not good; it is very difficult to hear the person on the other end Voice recognition, for destination entry, simply doesn't work.

I've bought a dearer FM transmitter in the past for indoor use and it was no use at all so I purposely opted for a cheap one this time ( I think it was cheaper). I figured it'd be worth the money just as a charger while I was away on (UK) hol. The reception isn't bad. Not exactly digital quality, but good enough. A bit like having all your music on one cassette - if you're old enough to remember them. Good value though, no complaints.

I would advise anyone who has a Tom Tom One XL to go out and buy a nice case in Asda or Tesco to protect their Satnav. This case might be nice with the XL logo on the front, but it does not give ultimate protection more than any other case would at half the cost. You can buy a leather case at that price, which I have done. It definitely needs protection from scratches and falls but be clever and get yourself a normal case even from Dixons otherwise for the same protection, you will be paying megabucks to advertise free for Tom Tom One XL!
