Electronics : Casio FX 85 ES Calculator

The last time I bought a scientific calculator was about twenty five years ago. It had an eight digit display and cost about £15.
Things have moved on! For the price of a glossy magazine, you get this really pretty amazing machine.
The most obvious improvement over previous calculators is the display. The fx-85ES has a multi-line dot-matrix display and an entry method that lets you input calculations in exactly the same way you would write them down. It's fun to see just how ridiculously complex you can make the calculation, with various levels of nesting, fractions within fractions within square roots or cube roots or whatever. The calculator handles it all without missing a beat.
You can choose, from the setup menu, whether ... Read More:

If you need a calculator for A Level Maths and aren't willing to deal with the complications / limitations of graphic calculators, then this calculator will be your best friend>

As a Further Maths student, this got me a few extra marks on papers (think C2) where they give you an integral and ask for the gradient function (just type it in, hah!).

Needless to say, the extra features are somewhat pointless. if you can't integrate polynomials you're probably in for a rough ride, so i only really reccommend using some of the more 'advanced' functions of the calculator for checking.

Statistics, on the other hand, is a different story. Pearsons Product Moment Correlation Coefficient anybody? how about regression? ... Read More:

A bargain price for a great calculator that has lasted me long. Great for maths exams. The buttons are very easy to press and read. The calculator is the right size to fit in any regular size pencil case. Made out of good quality materials. I have had the calculator for just over a year a bought it from Staples. Has all the things you need for a maths or science test or exam. Buy it if you would like a great calculator for any functions you wish! Comes with good tips on the calculator case. Eg Statistics and Basic Operations.

If you're looking for an inexpensive financial calculator for (e.g.) University/CFA or a not too quantitative job, then this one does the job fine. It's not as flash as the HP 12C, but personally I only need the TVM and Bond calculations, both of which it does. The manual is clear with good examples, and it only took me about 10 mins to get all I needed. Once you work out how to enter dates (12.0803 for 12th August 2003 in European format) and how/when to use the compute button, you're away. It's also ridiculously light, probably weighing as much as about 3 bic's, although it is still normal calculator size. The case is pretty funky for a calculator as well(!)

All in all, does what you would expect, is easy to use, and will hopefully sit on ... Read More:

Good all round calculator for eductional purposes. It takes a bit of getting used to the more visual logic but its really good for complicated fractions. The main concern over two calculators is that sometimes a button is a bit sticky and it is difficult to enter any number combination very rapidly, as it can be slower than you would like accepting numbers once you have pressed them. You can see what you have typed on the screen though. Also I'm not sure if there is a quicker way to correct mistakes once you have entered them but it can take a while to scroll forwards and backwards through what you have input.

I bought this calculator 2 years ago (haven't had to change the battery yet!) and use it from time to time to cross-check calculations I make on the spreadsheet. You can calculate many every day things with it: your mortgage payments, percentage profit/loss on investments, etc. It also has a good set of statistical functions.

I once had an Independent Financial Adviser visit me and he decided to borrow my calculator to figure out my pension contributions. He got stuck: there's no "=" key! It has RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) as standard but you can set it to Algebraic if you want to (I haven't used it much in Algebraic though).

The programming feature is awesome, and well worth the time you invest in learning it. Overall, this calculator ... Read More:

This is a very good calculator. We use it in my secondaryschool and we like them. The best thing is that you can make your own programs on it, so you don't have to make the same calculations over and over angin. It also has an equation solver, neet.

but if you want to make alot of programs and need a fast calculator then buy the TI-83+ silver ed. it's a littel faster, but if you dont need thaht tihs will do just fine.
