I got my 1tb My Book on Monday, it lasted a whole day and then started smelling of burnt electronics. Contacted Amazon, they were excellent and sent me a replacement Thursday, started it up, backed up some files. Got home backed up some more files from home pc then suddenly it died. It lasted 8 hours.

Thankfully Amazon seem really good about replacing dodgy products but why stock them in the first place.

excellent external hard drive , i was going to purchase the 250gb , but i opted for this 500gb just £7.00 price difference between both of them .. i take hundreds , thousands of photos and over time i have lost hundreds / thousands of them . so finally after 4 years i bought a external harddrive , the price of this is just super and the capacity is just big .. this hard drive should hopefully last years ..

great piece of kit , if you want to save you computers hard drive from getting clogged up with hundreds of pictures/documents & songs , its so easy to install and so easy to use & very well built and it comes with a super 2 years warranty ..

see u ..

Bought this to go with my iMac as the internal hard drive was filling up. Sits nicely on the foot which supports the computer. Silent, doesn't get too hot and looks really nice. Was thinking about getting 500GB non-mobile Freecom but really glad I went for the smaller mobile drive as it's much smaller and runs fine without a power supply minimising cables. Adding another higher capacity mobile drive when they come out and sitting it on top would still be smaller than the non-mobile drives. Not had any problems so far, would definitely recommend. Good price on amazon and super saver delivery quicker than expected as always.

I have owned a toughdrive similar to the above for a year and was very happy with it until I made the mistake of buying a second one. I downloaded all of the data from my laptop while I sent it away to be set up to get a dual boot facility. The new Toughdrive failed within a week of purchase. After lots of discusion the Freecom help desk and lots of tests on other computers they agreed it was the drive itself. I asked if there was anyway to recover the data. The answer was THE ONLY WAY TO RECOVER THE DATA IS TO BREAK OPEN THE UNIT WHICH TOTALLY INVALIDATES THE WARRENTY THEREFORE THE UNIT WILL NOT BE REPLACED. The freecom helpdesk gave me the address of a recommended company who then quoted me 500 GBP fOr the job.

I've now owned this drive for almost a year - mainly for media storage and to occasionally back up my own documents.

The drive is elegant and sits neatly on the end of a desk, and looks rather sleek. It is quiet at all times, even when being scanned or during transfers. Transfers themselves are quick and reliable. It is also easy to set up - I was up and running with it within minutes.

This is a very cheap drive but comes with problems. It does struggle connecting with my motherboard and freezes the whole system when copying to it. with the use of the Samsung HDD utility I was able to reduce the speed to SATA150. The freezing problem seems to be cured. My Western digital HDD has no problems at 3GB/s. On scanning the drive there is a huge number of defective sectors. Low level format is required to remove these. Buy with caution! The internet is full of people having problems with this drive. Two 500gb Western Digital drives would have been a much better option.

EDIT: format hanging at 3%. This drive is rubbish!

Small, quiet and really portable drive. Average speed 25 MB/s is not impressive comparing to 7200rpm 3.5 models but this drive is designed for easy access and mobility- not for speed! 5 years limited warranty included. 2 USB ports required!

I got the My Book to do a back up of my Mac. I plugged it in and it linked up fine and started doing a backup faultlessly. The next evening it was making a little more noise than normal and I realised it was no longer in communication with the Mac.
I phoned the Western Digital help desk 3 times. They were helpful but they could have made their instructions a little easier to follow. On the third phone call they did admit there didn't seem to be anything they could do, particularly as the Mac remained out of contact with the My Book. So off the disc went back to Amazons suppliers with everything my Mac contained aboard. The next day I spent several hours changing passwords with all those companies on the web that I visited. Definitely not reliable.

I purchased one of these 2 weeks ago, backed up my Laptop straight away and put the HD away. I tried over the weekend to back up some more files to it and although the light came on, it wasn't recognized/couldn't be found by my Laptop or the other 2 Computers I tried it on. I think this is an appauling product and will certainly not be purchasing Freecom items in the future.

I bought the Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus from Argos about six weeks ago. It came with a robust British plug, unlike some of the units reviewed earlier. The setting up instructions are rather confusing... the natural inclination is to try using the supplied CD, but that is for recovering your PC when the PC's hard-disc has failed. The actual set-up program is on the Maxtor disc, and is "launch.exe" which would not be obvious to someone not PC literate.
As suggested, I copied all the initial software, (instruction manuals etc), on the Maxtor onto my PC. I later realised that the manuals are repeated in 101 languages, so I later deleted all those except the English ones, so saving a lot of space on my PC hard drive.
The software driving the Maxtor is very easy to use. ... Read More:
