WD keep updating the outside of the box, but don't seem to have done anything about the fundamental problem which a lot of reviewers (including myself) have experienced: namely, after about 18 months you will get an I/O error, followed by clicks, followed by the disk being totally inaccessible. WD will provide a replacement, but all your data will be lost. This was a great storage solution until the day it died. As a permanent solution, experience has shown it to be unreliable.

I bought this product just under a year ago, and had a similar problem to the review below. It was working fine, doing what it was meant to, but then it just stopped working one day. It was not being recognised by any computers, Vista or XP. It would not let me reformat it. I'm actually so angry because I thought this would be the safest way to back up files and put my music on to save space on my computer, but now I've lost over 60GB of music!

I kept getting multiple problems with sections of files (.avi) missing when copied to this drive. Very strange I thought as the disk is a highly reliable one from the "Barracuda" series. Conclusion is that the disk controller is not man enough for the job. Opened the case, removed the drive (it's a standard sata type), installed it in my pc and it's working perfectly. My advice is to buy an sata drive and install it in an ici-box or similar if you want an external hard drive.

Only recently received mine, so I can't speak about longevity yet (will post back if anything breaks), but from first impressions it's a beautiful looking thing, and while compact, feels nice and solid. The aluminium case is great. It's near-silent: some people might hear more humming noise than others depending on the surface on which it sits, and from what I can tell that's down to vibration rather than anything else. (ie. if you place it on a mouse mat, you'll notice the sound disappears.) It seems to be well-sealed too, so less chance of dust getting in. There's no bracket with this drive, so while it's sturdy enough to stand on its side without wobbling, you should make sure it's not placed somewhere where it might get knocked. ... Read More:

Been going a fair few months now with no problems (touch wood). It stores most of our DVDs and gets used daily. Cool, and more importantly, quiet and the fact that it sleeps and wakes with your computer is excellent. Will certainly look at Western Digital again when it's time to upgrade.

I bought one of these as they are the cheapest 1tb harddrives available but the first one didnt work. it was pre-formated for windows and the disk utility on my mac kept coming up with an error warning when i tried to re-format or partition the drive. When i called support they told me to send it back, but the replacement did exactly the same. i'm returning this one and buying a Western digital instead as i've not had problems from them before

I've found this drive to be quiet and fast and really easy to use with Time Machine. Plugged it into my iMac, was asked whether I wanted to use it with Time Machine and away it went without any further intervention (in fact I was a bit disappointed that there was no tinkering...). A great buy.

As usual great service from amazon, item received within 24hrs of ordering. Setup couldn't be simpler,connect a couple of leads, install software and hey presto it 's up and running. Took me approx 10 mins to get the drive working. Started to backup my photos and music yesterday, 40 gig transferred in about 12hrs. All in all im very impressed, especially with the transfer speed. So far would recommend, wont give it 5 stars because ive not had it long enough to discover any potential glitches.

This My Book 2 Home Edition is a great hard drive with good quality at a nice price. I connect it to my Imac G5 using firewire and the transfer and streaming speeds are fine. It runs really quiet and if you leave it on all the time then it will spin down after being idle for a while as well as turning on and off with your computer. The light on the front is only really annoying in the evening as its in my bedroom but you just have to push the power on the back for it to completely turn off. Very happy with this product!
