Bought this camcorder a few days ago so not had much chance to try it out as yet. But agree having to remove the battery to attach mains supply to connect to a PC is a nuisance. Surely users can be left to decide for themselves whether the battery has enough charge left to carry out the required operation?
The major annoyance I have found is that even with the windcut switched on the microphones turn even the slightest hint of a breeze into a howling gale on the soundtrack. My first digital camcorder about 10 years ago was a Panasonic and had the same problem which I put down to digital camcorder technology then being new. Nothing seems to have improved with Panasonic models which is a particular nuisance with this model as there is no ... Read More:

This is a beautiful camera. It feels surprisingly solid for such a small object. Video images taken with this camera is superb but because the camera is so small that without supporting it against something solid you get quite a shaky image if you zoom in. The 4 megapixel still images are not good enough to produce a 10x8 print from it - which is a shame because the rotatable flip screen is ideal for composing candid photos and taking image from high and low angles. This also means carrying 2 cameras if you want to combine taking stills and video. If you buy this camera, I suggest you carry a spare battery with you as you might find you run out of power just in the middle of taking Spielberg beating footage

Having had a number of video cameras in the past, I am more than pleased with the HDR-SR12E. One reviewer complains about the quality of the stills, but for a video camera I think they are more than acceptable. Yes, the frame grabs are only about 800 to 900kb in file size, but in photo mode they are around 3mb.........perfectly adequate for holiday snaps to print at 5" X 7".

On the downside, its a nuisance having to select fade-in/out every time you use it.......my old Panasonic VHS-C camera of twenty years ago was better in that way! Also, with a camera of this value one would expect Sony to supply the full manual in booklet form rather than on cd!

I'm giving it 4 stars........a couple of quibbles in the previous paragraph, ... Read More:

Straight out of the box you quickly see you have a stylish and high quality HD camcorder. I have not yet bought an HD TV but wanted to use the latest HD technology when capturing Christmas, days out and birthdays. As detailed in the manual the camcorder easily connects to any TV over scart or RBG and scales down the output for 'normal' TVs.

Capturing recordings to the hard drive is as a one click operation. The 15x optical zoom is smooth and the LCD shows the recording in a crisp and clear window.

Transferring the HD files to a PC or laptop is easy with the free Sony Picture Motion Browser software, just install the software and connect the Sony docking station to the USB cable and connect to a free USB port on your PC. The software ... Read More:

I did some research on hard drive camcorders as I was fed up with tapes and I didn't imagine DVD would be straightforward. I was off to USA for the first time so wanted to ensure I had sufficient storage. I also didn't want to spend a fortune as I had no ambition to be a movie director. Out of the box I didn't need to read right through the manual to be able to use it straight away. I used standard quality but wish I had used the ultrafine mode to get that extra quality. The only niggle is that you switch it on by opening the screen and this hides the shutter control - so you have to close it again to open the shutter - until you remember (hard at my age). Zoom is controllable either by using a hand through the strap (with 3rd finger (traditional method) or by holding the camera ... Read More:

I purchased this camera in March 2008 and have used it on a number of occasions and am extremely dissappointed with the results. It is almost impossible to take steady shots, shake is very noticable even though the steady shot is activated. The microphone picks up creaks from the plastic casing and also when activating the zoom button, the microphone is also sensitive to wind noise even the silghtest breeze sounds like a gale blowing. Auto focus can be very tempremental and you can find your pictures losing focus for no obvious reason. The software does not allow you to edit your shots together other than in the order they were taken. I feel this camera has been a total waste of money and I am now actively seeking a replacement, I have been told that HD Cameras pictures are not very ... Read More:

After lots of research I settled on the SR55. The reasons for this were

1. Sony products are normally good quality.
2. 40gb hard drive meant I didn't have to carry lots of DVDs as with other camcorders.
3. Small size meaning easy to carry round on holiday.
4. Not overly priced.

What I have found about this camcorder so far is that it is very easy to set up and use. A novice could easily pick this up and be fully conversant within an hour. The docking station is very effective when connecting to a PC and/or TV. I personally have the station attached to my TV and PC together meaning I can connect to either one at the touch of a button. The software included was easy to install and use and the one touch disc burn is very handy. The file formats ... Read More:

I bought this item specifically because of it's size - and also i hadn't bought a gadget in a while!!! My last purchase was a Canon DSLR and I love it - however it is bigger than my old compact. So as we were going on holiday and I am the one that has to carry the cameras (you know what it's like guys!), I wanted a smaller camcorder than our old bulky JVC DV camcorder.

I toyed with a the idea of a small DV camcorder, but the simplicity of the GZ-MG330H and my experience with JVC to date made the decision easy. Although this is around £100 more expensive than the DV equivalent, it is lighter and quicker to use. This is the equivalent of a point and shoot digital camera, with no settings for white balance, no fill light, no special features. But it's great...

My first venture into camcorders has proved to be a wasted exercise with this model. I wanted something that was easy to use, it is even without referring to the manual. This has earned one star!
However, if this is an example of camcorders then I'll stick to recording video on my existing digital STILLS camera in normal mode.
The so called auto focus reacts very slowly, if at all, when played back directly to a television from both HDD and SD card (Sandisk) and recorded in ultrafine, in good daylight, the colours are totally false and the picture quality is very poor with what appears to be a woodgrain effect. In fact I've seen better pictures on old poorly recorded VHS tapes. It makes no appreciable difference if recording in any quality from normal and fine to ultrafine.I've tried ... Read More:

When I started looking into buying a camcorder some of the things I was quite specific about were:

1) Had to be Mac compatible
2) Recording to hard disk or memory card
3) Cost no more than £300

The relevance of the last point is that this is my first camcorder so I wanted to make sure that using a camcorder really is for me before splashing out on a more expensive high spec model.

After speaking to someone in the know about the recording format I was advised to go for the memory card option for two reasons; generally lower cost and because a memory card is not a moving part and therefore not in danger of breaking down. And with the low cost of SD cards on websites like Amazon the cost of additional memory sticks should be an issue. The camcorder ... Read More:
