I used this machine for recording interviews as part of my social science studies and, although considerably cheaper when I bought mine, it is a good basic tape recorder with good sound quality and an excellent range. I don't see any point spending more money if this is the kind of thing you are going to use it for.

I am a singer/songwriter and when I record tunes on the piano, it helps me memorise some melodies I created and I can always erase something if I don't like it. Worth the buy. Sony is a good brand!

It's cheap and 10 times cheaper than a decent MP3 recorder (like a zoom multitrack) so it's worth getting for recording music lessons and quick demos of ideas and most people still have a tape player so you can play your ideas back to them. But it's a quite hissy and tinny. Even listening through headphones there's not much base response. It's very plasticky and doesn't feel like it'll put up with loads of knocks. However, for around £25 inc postage, you'll not be too bothered if it gets lost or damaged, not like if you've just forked out £200 on an MP3 recorder!
I'll have to see if it lasts now as it'll be living in my guitar bag from now on and I may try it with another mic

Have used this for four years and cannot fault it. It is light and very easy to use. I initially thought I would be using it for work but have found it ideal for keeping a record of the birds I see on a daily basis. With three files I have had notes from meetings in one, a list of 50 birds in another and then reminders of what I have to do in the day in the third. Its smaller than a mobile phone and the batteries last a long time. With 2hrs recording time you dont need to spend more. I'd highly recommend it.

Every thing you expect from Sony.
I am sure I will use this for at least five years.

Two days later.....
Sory to say this about sound. Very poor sound, two three meters away cant hear and now I will keep this for about five months.

If you see USB interface in a product description you expect that you can at least plug it on to you PC and transfer files across. Maybe its going to come with some nice software that makes that easy so that you can synch the two together and keep it organised.
I was really wrong. This product only works with the software supplied, end of story.
If you're lucky you're going to be in the 75% range and it will be fine for you. Neither of my machines were, so unlucky for me. However in three or five years time when your current PC has died good luck getting the software to work with the next machine you buy.
I'm really annoyed about the lack of information before you buy about what it will and will not work with, so not even the glimmer of ... Read More:

Fabulous product! I am a tutor in adult education. I record learner discussions and feedback, lesson evaluations etc. I don't have to write or type them up any more since audio is valid evidence and supports the government's drive to encourage e-learning. And, it's so easy to use. Press the record button and away you go. Recordings are loud and clear with no distortion. There is no need to struggle with any included software (there was none included with mine though). I bought a 3.5mm jack male to 3.5mm jack male lead from an amazon seller for £1.40 including postage. Plug one end into the headphone socket on the voice recorder and the other end into the microphone jack on desktop or laptop and play the recordings through "Audacity" which is a free programme ... This is a not too bad cheap alternative for the occasional user but if it is intended for business use you will find yourself continually shelling out for batteries. I easily use a set of batteries per week so it's not entirely the green alternative. The manual says not to use rechargeable batteries - not exactly sure why unless Olympus holds shares in Duracell.
