Used the Forerunner 301 for the first time after it arrived today and I am extremely impressed. Downloaded the latest Training Center software and this works flawlessly on 64 bit Vista. The interface with Google Earth is a superb addition and proved the accuracy of the GPS - easily within the <10m tolerance as specified. I ran along beaches, a riverside and roads and all the GPS plots of my run matched in Google Earth spot on. This obviously means that the speed/pace readings will also be accurate and with the excellent totally flexible editable workout facility this is going to be a big motivator to get me back out training regularly to get me fit for Windsurfing. I will also be able to use the Forerunner to check out the speeds I can get up ... Read More:

33.Garmin Nuvi 310 Satellite Navigation - UK Mapping + Bluetooth from: Garmin

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Electronics : Garmin Nuvi 310 Satellite Navigation - UK Mapping + Bluetooth
Pros
* Long Battery life
* Has a Bluetooth connection, Audio book, MP3 and you can purchase add ons like the traffic management aerial/European maps and the maps and firmware are upgradeable.
* It has a detour button so if you suddenly find the road blocked it will navigate a different route

Cons
* The biggest problem for me is that it doesn't have a "direction arrow window" of the up coming turn, so you have to follow the white arrow (wherever it is on the map), my old Route 66 was so reliable it could guide me by the voice instructions alone, just glance down if I missed an instruction and check the handy direction arrow for next turn arrow in the left hand corner of the screen - not with Nuvi - I find I have to ... This is our first and will be our last GPS for walking - If the others available are in anyway similar to this, anyway.

We bought this some time ago and managed to get it working. As one of the other reviewers commented, it certainly does have a high learning curve and require a lot of patience to get to grips with. Garmin make you jump through hoops to install this device. For example, why should I have to register online? I have bought it new, I have a serial number - why do I need to register online as well? The instructions that come with the device are not particularly comprehensive, either. You just have a work out a lot of it, yourself.

However, we did get it working and I even invested in MemoryMap mapping software ... Read More:

I bought this unit 3 weeks ago from Halfords for £99 and have used it almost everyday since. Its a very good example of using good technology to make a very user-friendly product. It was very easy to set-up straight out of the box and personalise after registering on the Garmin website.

Then Garmin sent me a map update CD which I connected to the unit via my laptop and let the CD installer do its job. In the middle of the update, the USB cable got disconnected and that was the start of a big problem. the unit froze up and when I restarted it, showed the Garmin GPS BSOD - 'No detailed mapping available. Your Streetpilot cannot function'. The computer would not longer recognise the unit as a peripheral. I tried myGarmin support but tthat takes forever to load. ... Read More:

To agree with Vic's comment, the item I received is not what is pictured. Instead of an L-shaped plug like the photo and the original Garmin adapter, this one came with a straight plug. I could have found a straight one else where for less...

I think that this is a well-made and useful piece of kit. As others have pointed out, the basemap is useless, so you'll need something else - budget accordingly. I use Openstreetmap, which is free, but turn-by-turn navigation will not work. This isn't a problem for me - I prefer to plan my own route. I find the unit accurate, although as someone else has pointed out it can lose its signal temporarily under cloudy skies or near tall buildings. It does this infrequently, though, and usually regains its signal within a few seconds.
You'll probably need to be a bit of a geek to get the best out of the Edge 705, but if you want the maximum amount of data (most of which is accurate; the altimeter is much better than the old Avocet I used in the early 90s, and the heart rate ... Read More:

I had problems with my cable but in all honesty wasn't sure if it was this half (GPS TO SERIAL PORT) of the cable or the other half of the cable (USB TO SERIAL PORT) that was at fault.

Downloading was hit and miss, sometimes it would work, other times it said it couldn't find the GPS. It even slipped out of its connection at the GPS end on several occasions.

Wiggling the two halfs of the serial connectors together seemed to fix the problem each time the message appeared 'unable to find GPS', but I soon became very annoyed with this and decided to send both halves back.

In the end I settled for a one piece cable (not available on this site - see comments) which works perfectly and was cheaper too.

Great piece of kit - as long as it works. I was attracted by this cool GPS when I saw a friend wearing one. Unfortunately his failed just out of warranty and now mine has done the same. Coincidence, poor quality or cynical built-in obsolescence. Anyway, buy this GPS only if you will get enough use within the 1 year expected lifetime.
