I've used this for 18 months now. It's a great piece of kit, but it is not worth the £££ I spent on it. For the money, I expect something all-singing and all-dancing, not something that has me swearing in frustration at it's limitations.
If you're contemplating buying this, see if you can borrow a unit to have a go with. A cheapo sat-nav in a waterproof tankbag might be a more cost-effective option.

I've had this unit for a couple of years now and I absolutely love it. It really helps gauge your training whether you are walking, running or biking, on or off road. It is easy to use, clear to see and comfortable to wear. Battery life is great too and the unit is easy to recharge from your PC. The only minor gripe I have is that it can lose signal under the cover of trees. The software is great and is continually updated, and your routes can be shown on Google Maps as well now. Value for money is increasing as the price drops.

I have used this for a while and found it very effective. Then one day I hit a (speed) bump and the unit fell on to the road. It wasn't damaged, luckily, and I think I may not have clipped it properly into the holder (I noticed subsequently that if I put it in carelessly it wasn't properly secured). Anyway, to be sure I now use the short lanyard that comes with the unit so that, if it does fall out again, it can't fall far.

64.Garmin Forerunner 50 HRM&SDM BUNDLE from: Garmin

I bought this to keep me motivated for a 10k run later this year. So far I've found it a really good training aid - fascinating to see my heart rate & pace whilst training - although it's taking me a while to figure out all the settings. My advice (like previous reviewer) would be to read & re-read the manual first - my first run with it ended up being 6 hours long because I forgot to save the data & then went out to the shops before I uploaded it...oops! It's a little more tricky than they make out! I couldn't get it to upload data automatically to my laptop (this could be just me of course) However I managed it manually without too much trouble & now it seems fine.
This bundle is by far the best price I found - and I would say, unless ... Read More:

This is my first GPS of any sort and I have gone through a mixture of emotions with this from frustration and disappointment at the beginning, to shear pleasure and exhilaration right now.

Firstly, I should say that this is a great little device. It has everything that you could want from an outdoor GPS: creating tracks, following routes, geocaching ready, rugged, easy connection to PC, micro xD-card slot, WAAS/EGNOS enabled (i.e. very accurate), 25 hour battery lifetime and so on.

Why was I frustrated and disappointed? Well I kind of expected that when I switched it on, after it worked out where I was, it would have some kind of lovely Ordinance Survey type map - this is so far from the truth. Even though I had been forewarned about the ... Read More:

67.Garmin eTrex GPS Personal Navigator from: Garmin

I bought this 2 years ago and have enjoyed walking with it ever since - combined with maps to plot out the route it makes walking much more enjoyable as you can concentrate on the scenery not the map - and you get the computer readouts of time walking, speed, mileage etc etc. The only thing is that the aerial is not very good and the signal disappears easily in woods(even in winter!) and other times so I'd recommend to buy the later version with a better aerial. And do I miss the maps? no! you don't need a busy power-hungry screen and once you have got the hang of what it is telling you about your route and tracks then it is like reading the stars...!

Amazon seem to have a problem with Garmin kit and describing the compatability. This item works well with the 101 too. (foretrex and forerunner). The bit that straps to the bar is solid and the gps holder is fine too, although you need to make sure there is enough space to operate the release catch.

Electronics : GARMIN - City Navigator microSD Card with maps of the USA/Canada
I ordered the City Navigator NT mapping of North America from Pentagon GPS and it arrived within a couple of days. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually the very latest 2009 version!
Using it is simplicity itself - no new menus, no need to connect to the Internet etc. All you have to do is take it out of the box, plug it into the slot in the side of the Garmin GPS receiver and switch on. Just type 'Canada' or 'United States' as the address country, then the province or state as the address 'county', followed by city and street just as you would for Europe!
I haven't managed to get post code location working for Canada yet, but that's frankly a minor issue. Zip code locations are not provided as an option for the USA, it seems.
