This is the 3rd generation of Deskstars (IBM and Hitachi) I've bought - they have all been outstanding, consistently top of the pile. You can see the speed comments below - the best; my 1st 1TB drive is in a near airtight external enclosure, quiet and trouble free (I'm about to buy another); easy to set-up. Over 13 years all others (Seagate, Maxtor and others) have suffered catastrophic failures in normal use. I now only buy Deskstars.

Just got this today. A snap at £43.00 (that's about 12 gigs per £1). The install was a breeze - instantly seen by XPsp2, no need for drivers. Installed a full version in about 8 minutes; noticbly faster than previous 7200rpm drives. Its also very quiet. 500g is a lot of space and external reviews rate the 'Deskstar' series: grab one.

I used to have a Hitachi TravelStar 80GB 7200RPM ATA/IDE on my Dell Inspiron 9300. After 4 years it started to give me grinding noises. So I was looking for the same model for a replacement. However it is now impossible to find a 7200RPM ATA 2.5inch disk now dayes. All you can get is SATA.

So I got this Hitachi TravelStar 5K160 ATA/IDE. I put my Norton Ghost disk image from the previous disk onto this one and started working straight away.
I do a lot of 3D work and image manipulation work. Haven't really noticed any reduction in speed with this drive. I do have 2GB RAM on my laptop.
Also it is generating less heat as expected due to the reduced RPM.

It is worth noting that my previous disk was ATA100. ... Read More:
