I would highly recommend this disk. I'm using it with a Mac, and it worked straight out of the box (although I chose to reformat it in Mac OS Extended). It is very slim, very solidly build with a completely metal body, and it is almost silent. The buss power is a bonus as well -- really makes this easy to use.

I have just had the misfortune to purchase a lacie drive.

After going through the very badly documented set-up procedure, I managed to get it working.

The drive was noisy and slow with poor connectivity response times.

The drive then failed, I sent it back to be repaired (took nearly a month) and now it has been returned in working condition minus all of my backups.

Utter garbage, avoid at all costs.

superb silent enclosure.

incidentally, a 32mb cache is no faster than a 16mb cache on a 1tb drive. makes no difference whatsoever.

its just a marketing gimmick to attract people who think more cache is better. It is, but theres a limit, and anything over 16mb on 1tb is completely pointless, you will not see a difference.

The set up is simple, connect it, plug it in and enter the IP address of the drive in your browser. On XP, I was able to connect without any problems, as was my Xbox360 and Freecom Musicpal for streaming video, pictures and music.
However, my Vista preinstalled pc was only able to connect to the drive as media streaming device (in order to read files from it, but unable to write to it). And it was able to access the drive via FTP (both reading and writing), but it isn't able to connect to it via windows explorer (as XP can) The supplied lacie network discovery tool doesn't even work on Vista (not that it does anything usefull)
The drive does not sleep and is constantly spinning which wastes a lot of power and introduces unnecessary wear as well. ... Read More:

I have two of these drives and thus far I am very pleased with them. They have a huge capacity, are small and light and, are reasonably fast. They make ideal travelling companions for my MacBook. I have only two minor quibbles with the drives and they are the strange way that they connect and the lack of an off/on switch. They have a very short built in lead which has to be connected to a supplied USB extension lead. This is a slightly awkward process and I cannot for the life of me see the point of it or of how it offers any advantage over the normal procedure of plugging a lead into the back of the drive. That said, it is a minor point and I don't think that it would put me off buying another but, if I had the choice, I would go for a drive with a standard ... Read More:
