This is a brilliant piece of kit. Having used Netgear kit for a number of years, and working with networks as part of my job, this was really easy to set up. All Netgear equipement ( that I have used ) come with a very nice standard interface .

You will need to configure the dns server addresses, and perhaps the local subnet ranges ( although the default will be ok by default ) .

You will need to know your NAT ( can disable this ) , DNS servers, Encapsulation ( usually pppoA) , internet account login details, Multiplexing Method ( VPI=0 , VCI=38 works for most pppoA ) . You get lots of security settings and DMZ server access if required.

I also disabled the wireless access , as I do not use this.

When given the challenge to find a well priced small business firewall/router I quickly homed in on the Netgear Prosafe range. This offered good value and a LIFETIME warranty !

The firewall range offered exactly what I was after, the main decision was VPN capacity and any extra functionality.

I decided upon the FVS338 with a 50 VPN tunnel capacity and dial-up backup. The latter dial-up backup feature is rarely seen these days but in a fallback position you can be sure POTS will still be working !

When I received the device, I was impressed with the robust metal case design and simple layout. All the lights and status indicators are at the front and all the sockets and power at the back, ideal for those ... Read More:

I work as a network admin and as such see a lot of kit Cisco etc. This for the price rates as one of the best peices of kit I have seen or used. Dont get me wrong it's not Cisco $$ standard but it is very good. I have used the Firewall and routing quite a lot and find it reliable and fast. I would recommend this product. Recently I upgraded the firmware somthing that normally reqires a little thought but it went on very easily with the inbuilt wizard.

Plugging in this device, i was greeted with nothing, due to the fact i run a purely Linux network. The manual and net indicated i needed a media server running, so tried MythTV, MediaTomb and TwonkyMedia, all three were recognised by the device, and were listed on the front screen of the Netgear as discovered servers, however TwonkyMedia was the only one i was able to get working and stream videos.

Once working, i have found some of the videos over the lan as being a bit jerky on some videos, not major, but the keen eye will spot it.

Good idea, just needs better documentation
