My son has one of these to operate his D80. The other day he left it in his jeans and it did 40 minutes at 40°. Luckily my wife spotted it before it went onto the spin cycle. Anyway, I am pleased to report that after drying out it works as well as it ever did.

I am not a photographic expert, but a novice who has been eager to upgrade from compact cams to a DSLR for a long time. Consequently I did a lot of research prior to investing in my D40 recently, and I am very happy with my decision. Sure, if you are willing to spend considerably more money you will get a better camera, but it is foolish to think that you would also automatically get better pictures! If you can do without certain 'bells & whistles', like liveview or bracketing for instance, then this camera gives you all you need to take great photos. Also don't assume that an 8 or 10 megapixel camera is 'better' - 6 is more than enough unless you want to enlarge your photos to poster size, or you want to crop ... Read More:

"Spare" battery. Pretty much essential for all but the most casual of users. So, if you're using the likes of a D80 and above you're probably a "keen amateur". Battery. Extra. Genuine Nikon Brand. Good price. Done.

what a great piece of kit. im 18 and ive been taking pictures for as long as i can remember (my mum and dad are both photographers), i have a nikon d3 and a d2x, but i needed something that was cheaper, that i could take to locations where the camera might encounter the odd knock! i had the nikon d40 when that first came out and thought it was a little cracker, but no longer needed it, so ebay it was for that. but i can safely say ill be using it alot more then i thought, the VR kit lens is great (although im using the 55-200 onit atm) but for £340 (what i paid) this camera AMAZING, ive used camera more ten times that and recieved results far less satisfying, the camera is light, and VERY well made, it feels like ... I am pleased with the camera itself but didn't appreciate that delivery was from the Netherlands. As such, the instructions, which appear comprehensive, come in 4 languages but none of them are English. In addition, the battery charger power lead comes with a european pin plug. A UK plug was enclosed but you either need to change the plug yourself or use an adaptor. None of this was apparent when I ordered the camera and whilst not a serious problem, it was certainly frustrating.

This lense feels well built and is compact enough to fit into almost any kit bag. It performs well when used for portrait work and is a worthwhile purchase for that use, although it has limited application for anything else. For the price, give it a go, you will produce enough good shots to make it well worth the investment.
