Plustek OpticFilm 7200 Film Scanner

My system crashed when I loaded the SilverFast SE image handling software supplied with the 7200 scanner. The scanner operated correctly until the end of the preview scan when the system also crashed with the same error report. I have an HP Scanjet 6200C flatbed scanner as well.
Despite the promised reply in 24 hours, PlusTek UK needed two emails and a phone call before I obtained any advice which then came from Germany. This was "There is conflict between HP and Film scanner. Please un install or de active (go to device manager to de active HP) HP install only plustek film scanner". I had already stated that I had deactivated the HP scanner.
A further request for help resulted in ... Read More:

Well a question not a comment. How do you think this would work on small (old) photos, small negs etc.? I am fed up buying things said to do what I need them to do, only to find that they don't! I have photos from 1940's that are no way standard and something like this might just do the trick, even if it wasn't exactly designed for it.

Using with a Mac PC running OSX 10.5.2 I found this to be excellent and far in front of others at the price. I have now scanned some 1,000 slides using the simple preview method at 600 DPI and am fully satisfied.
A special few of my slides had been transferred from the old 2 1/4" square transparencies taken in 1948 and were in very bad condition. The Plustek and software dealt with all the rough stuff and a tweak with Photoshop and they were amazing.
I damaged the install disc and received a new one from Germany in 3 days free of charge. So excellent after sales too.

I spent a lot of time searching the web for a scanner specifically for negatives. The older models from plustek got good reviews, and Amazon seemed the obvious choice as they Amazon have never let me down. I must admit to being nervous about ordering electronic goods via the web, but the scanner arrived in one piece. Top marks also to plustek when my adaptor failed, and when I contacted the customer support they promptly sent a new one.

The scanner itself? It works a dream, the software does take some time to get used to but compensates really nicely for scratches and dust. I also had some light damaged negatives which gave reddish tints in the uncorrected prints. The colour correction was able to remove this effect very nicely. I ... Read More:

I also bought this scanner after looking at many other reviews. It's a very good -sturdy, compact & with a decent case and leads. I'll use it to scan & collate a collection of thousands of 35m slides - yes, time consuming. I've tested it with a few good ones (Ektachrome 25 using tripod, etc)and found some useful info - the quick scan software gives slightly dull results and is really just for snapshots but OK and could be used with any selectable resolution and other software to enhance them. The Silverfast software loaded fine on my modern, but basic, laptop & Windows XP. It is overcomplicated but has an auto-enhance button which works very well. It locked up once when I overdid it for the PC's memory. Some scan times including ... Read More:

The important thing to know about this scanner is that it is very good at scanning books, which is what it was designed for. It is not very good for photograph scanning. I scan books for a living and turn them into digitized facsimile versions on CD. Some of the books I scan are very old and delicate and include some hefty tomes several inches thick. This scanner has saved me hours of work that I used to have to spend "cleaning up" images. It virtually eliminates shadows even on tightly bound books. If I have a book with illustrations, I scan them on a photo scanner at a higher dpi and cut and paste, thus having the best of both worlds. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to scan books, especially if they are text only.

Compact and robust and straightforward to use. These are the plus points. When I installed on my Windows XP SP2 laptop all went well, until the point where it said "restart your computer". I couldn't - the whole system had frozen! Clicking the Start button (to power-off / restart) had no effect; CTRL+ALT+DEL had no effect; trying to switch off the laptop had no effect - the system had completely hung. Unplugged at the mains and the computer went into battery mode. Unlucky one-off, or a common problem with this software? Took a break and system worked fine (with scanner installed) on restart. Based on previous reviews did not install SilverFast software. After a couple of passes of some old (1990's) transparencies using just the scanner software and ... Read More:
