12.Sapphire Radeon HD 3650 512MB DDR2 PCI-E VGA / TVO / DVI from: SAPPHIRE

Electronics : Sapphire Radeon HD 3650 512MB DDR2 PCI-E VGA / TVO / DVI

This is a nice upgrade from an integrated graphics chipset. Vista Performance information gives it a 5.5 for desktop graphics and 5.2 for games graphics. It appears to a 5W to the power draw of the machine compared to the integrated graphics chipset when working on the desktop (e.g. mostly idle).

At this point in time, I'd suggest looking into the new ATI 4000 series cards like the 4670 and 4830. I got badly burned by NVidia drivers on Vista and have not tried any of their recent hardware.

Upgrading from a factory overclocked MSI Nvidia 8800GTS 640 this is slightly larger, but still managed to fit in my small form factor Shuttle XPC (a 400W SN27P2) with relative ease. There's no way the GTX series cards would fit without fouling components on the motherboard.

It needs additional power, two 6 pin PCI connectors at the end of the card, one usually available from a connector on most modern motherboards, the other by converting a molex power connector (the 4 pin plugs that fit DVD-ROM or PATA drives) or in my case, converting an SATA power connector to molex first. Sapphire provide a single molex to PCI power lead in the box.

Noise at startup is similar to my old 8800GTS card, and at load is perhaps a touch ... Read More:

Swapped out my flagging Nvidia 8400GS for this good value card which (with a bit of stretching of power cables) slotted nicely into my PC's PCI-express slot. Initially lost sound completely, but soon realised the output socket caters for sound itself - remedied by adjusting the BIOS sound setting. This card delivers relatively high performance graphics, without blowing your weeny power supply. Although not silent, its quiet and makes Bioshock and HalfLife2 etc lush and emersive, whilst also maximising Vista resolution. A great upgrade, supplied by Pixmania promptly without problems.
