I'm a pretty well seasoned photographer type but a bit a few hours spent with this lens has convinced me that I needed one of these lenses immediately.

This is one of their Sigma EX range which according to the bumf means it's better engineered, better built, higher quality materials, at least on the outside, and to be fair that's about right. The focus ring is not too loose, not too tight, the motor is quick and quiet and it's all finished in a nice kind of grippy tactile stuff. It's got a good solid metal mount but as expected it is fairly weighty lump when bolted to the camera, but not in a bad way, just solid and well balanced.

It's internally focussing which is good. Because the lens is physically fairly short ... Read More:

This is a good solid lens, capable of great fast action shots I use mine at air displays and get nice tight shots of the aircraft. But it is also great for more artistic shots such as close up nature work. The image quality I get through my camera with this lens is amazing vivid colors and great detail.
The only down side to the lens I have found is that sometimes the auto-focus can seam a bit slow but switch to manual and the focusing ring works really well for fast or subtle focus changes.
Overall this is a great lens.

I have a Nikon d40 and for this camera there is nothing even vaguely similar for anywhere near the price. On a DX mount = 45mm equiv. with f1.4. However to get best results for sharpness and contrast I would stick to f2-2.8 range and use the max aperture only in low light or for EXTREME depth of field effects. You have to be real careful at f1.4, sometimes you focus on the nose and the eyes are out of focus! You can feel the weight of all that glass - about double that of the kit zoom. Still pretty compact though and suits the small dimensions of the d40. Focusing is quick and quiet, the huge aperture brightens up the viewfinder image. Supplied case is well padded but disproportionately big. Can't wait to use this for parties and evening street shots. ... Read More:

I was introduced to the joy of super-zoom lenses when I bought from Amazon a Fuji FinePics S5700 as a pocketable back-up to my Nikon D40 SLR. The Fuji had a built-in 10-to-1 zoom lens, which made it very versatile. The Nikon D40 has a standard 18-55 mm kit lens, which is excellent and very sharp but its limited zoom range left me rather frustrated at missing too many shots at longer ranges. I wanted the image quality of the Nikon with the versatility of the Fuji and decided to buy an 18-200 super-zoom lens for the D40.

A review in "What Digital Camera" magazine gave the Sigma 18-200 super-zoom lens a higher rating than the Nikon equivalent, which is also considerably more expensive. I bought the Sigma for my D40 and it has definitely become my lens ... Read More:

At this price this really is a good lens - OK on a Canon 350D you need good light and a faster ISO setting but even at a higher ISO setting the 350D takes good useable shots.

I would love a faster zoom lens but as I cannot afford / justify that amount of money, this lens will get the shots I need as long as it's sunny! Or macro shots with a flash.
