The original Canon lens at 55mm max was a bit restrictive when taking pictures from places where it was impossible to get close. I needed a lens that ideally was good for portraiture as well as getting closer to subjects withour loss of definition. This lens covers what I was looking for and picture quality is excellent. Tamron have been making lens's for a long time and I had one back in the old 35mm days and the dedication to producing good quality products continues today. This lens represents such good value for your money and if one bears in mind the limitations of the lack of USM (is that worth 2-3 times more?) it is a must buy for anyone looking to go that bit further than the standard lens. Well recommended. Should also mention it ... Read More:

3.Tamron AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Canon from: Tamron

A little cracker for the cash. It's compact, decently constructed considering the price and is very sharp when stopped down a touch from wide open. It's still useable at f2.8 mind, and is a massive improvement over any of Canon's cheap zooms in this range.
It's supposedly a bit noisy (never been something that bothered me in a lens) and the AF can hunt a bit in low light I've found - but this can be said about more expensive lenses too.
If you're after your first DSLR, consider buying a body with one of these and save yourself a bit of cash in the long run.

Tamron appear to have updated the cosmetics on this lens, and even though it's only the focus/zoom rings, it certainly makes the lens look better quality and gives it similar ergonomics to the rest of their lens line - which I generally like. Kudos for that.
Unfortunately the optics aren't great. It needs stopping down to sharpen things up and it's too fuzzy for my liking after 200mm. Build quality is not exactly solid and the macro on it is a blighter to get into/out of.
If you want something cheap and serviceable, this'll do you. If image quality is important, look elsewhere!

I'm new to using DSLRs and would not normally want to comment on something I have little experience on, but feel I should offer a comment if only to counter the ridiculous 1 star review based on someones lack of research rather than the products attributes!

I bought a refurbished D50 rather than the D40 exactly for the reason stated in the aformentioned review. The auto focus motor was moved from the body (D50) to the lens (D40) and therefore only lenses with the AF-S designation will operate with autofocus on the D40.

So... as a beginner with an entry level DSLR I wanted an inexpensive lens with a longer length than the 18-55 kit lens. The Tamron is brilliant value. The colours are bright, nice and sharp, auto focus works ... Read More:

This lens offers you 28mm to 300mm for around 240 quid! Now i`ve been looking for a good zoom lens to complement my Canon eos 400D and this has pretty much beaten all the competion.
it`s price for a start then it`s also compact and light.
So, unless you desire image stability and/or weather proofing this light weight compact lens is perfect.

Thought I'd give Tamron a try - but I wish I hadn't wasted my money. Sharpness is poor at the long end, especially at wider apertures. Macro switch is cludgy to operate. Zoom is counter-intuitive (or maybe I've used too many lenses with the reverse motion). Sony or Sigma in future.
