I thought this was well priced so I took the plunge. I have a samsung 250 gig external and I find it way better than the western digital. The usual story of it been way short of the size it advertises as (500gig really is 465gig so thats 35 gig short, I dont know how the lying tossers get away with it, thats false advertising) Slow at referencing the drive, annoying software bundled with it on the drive, keeps clicking and making noises like its struggling. I Would never, ever, invest in one of these again, my other external runs rings around this one.

Excellent little piece of kit. Simple to use - no real installation as it sets itself up. I'm not particularly 'techy' so I don't know whether it's fast or not but it does all I want it to do - backing up pictures, documents etc. and with the included software you can take your own desktop images, programmes and work with you to use on any computer. Jolly clever.

I've had the hard drive for about 2 hours, and so far it has been amazing. I literally plugged it into my computer and it recognised it straight away and now I'm backing up all of my data. Can't fault it! Plus, for the price it was, I'd say it's a real bargin.

Does what it says on the can. Purchased this beautiful black box 6 months ago. I have an iMac. I plugged it in, the icon appeared, I clicked on the icon and started loading. Thats it!

I have 2 WD drives: one 500GB for home use/backup and one 160GB for on the road. Both are simple to use and reliable; I would recommend WD to you if you are looking for a straightforward Windows or Mac storage device. Incidentally, don't bother with the free/bundled software tools; they offer very little benefit or functionality. Just plug in and go...

After the numerous positive reviews and given the decent price, I finally selected this external hard drive. It is compact, light and powered using a USB. Extremely easy to use and convenient. Recommended as an affordable and easy-to-use means for transferring and storing data. Was recognised instantly and worked straight-away from my laptop. The 500 gb is around the same price and, for me, it was a question of the 160 gb being powered by USB. 160 gb is fine for storing a lot of music, photoe etc.

I've been using this product for a couple of months now with my laptop. It's obviously designed with portability in mind - it's tiny and so light that I'm surprised I haven't lost it! I carry it around loose in my laptop bag and it seems strong enough too. Plenty of space to fit all your stuff on - I in fact mainly use mine for storing games and tv recordings on (they take up a lot of space on laptops HDD) and it does the job perfectly. Would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a very portable external HDD with plenty of space for under £100.

Tried two different drives, delivered a week apart. Both worked fine with USB but the first one would not connect at all via eSATA and the second one would only do so if the plug was forced very hard into the socket. Looks like they were part of a bad batch. Be prepared. After wasting so much time, have ordered a Seagate drive instead.

I was using the Essential version of the Western Digital My Book, but after accumulating three 500GB models I thought I would just upgrade to a single 1TB model instead. As a Mac Mini user, I was amazed at how much faster FireWire 400 transfers are over USB 2.0--it takes under three mins to move 4GB of data to this drive. It's also a lot quieter than my old Essential drive, fits in well with the Mac and is future-proofed with FireWire 800 support. I cannot recommend the Studio edition highly enough.

Very please with My Book as an external hard drive but not so please with supplied software. Paid significantly more for this product over the price of equivalent "Essential" EHD so as to get the automatic back-up software. Once downloaded this software did required back-up and as promised continued to keep tabs on what was happening so backing up as it went along. However system was so so slow. After matter of days had to remove and back-up by drag and drop. By slow I mean very very slow. So slow that it could not log on to internet. Once removed all back to normal broadband speeds. So my recommendation - If you want back-up buy the cheaper "Essential" product.
