I use mine as a common file server in our 100mbps ethernet network at home for variously one to three computers, depending on which of them is awake or connected. It does not mind what OS is used by a connected computer, so makes common file access simple and intuitive, since it just appears as another drive in the usual list. I've never touched the USB port so cannot comment on that. It allows for sections to be password protected by individual users, and these appear as individual drives on the list. I've set it to go into low power or sleep mode after a few minutes of inactivity, and it then takes a second or so to wake up when accessed, otherwise the transfer speed is limited by the network.
