I was a bit impulsive when buying this. Usually I read a whole lot of forums before purchasing. I bought this because I have a USB2 MyBook which has been brilliant.

This NAS version is another story. I bought this drive to stream VOB files to my media player. But the speed of the drive is too slow for streaming DVD's. Reading more about this drive on the forums shows that the max speed is at about 4MB/sec. 4MB/sec! What is the point of a advertising this drive as a gigabit networked drive if it only does 4MB/sec. Delving into this, and reading about other NAS drives, such as the Linksys 100MB NAS drive, I've realized that all of the reasonably priced NAS drives average at about this speed due to onboard processor limitations. ... The best of a variety of external HDD's I've used. I store VMware images on mine, and my virtual machines run great even though they're on a USB drive. With the compact size, and the fact that it is cool and quiet I highly recommend.

I am a professional photographer and I needed a portable hardrive to be able to store and carry work easily between home and the studio, so I wanted something that wouldn't die on me within a couple of weeks of using it.

Western Digital makes various versions of the passport HD and choosing can be a bit confusing. My Passport Studio is for a few reasons the most suitable for this kind of use. It can be confusing to see on WD website another version which might seem superior to the Studio but it's not. Just for one reason alone Studio is best, Elite has only USB connectivity whereas Studio has both USB and FireWire.

A few other things I like about this portable hardrive is the size, small and thing, the metallic enclosure which ... Read More:

I bought this drive a few weeks/months ago and I am very glad I did.
I use it on a MacBook (white, bought early 2008) and the drive connects on a FireWire 400 (pretty much as fast as a USB2.0). This feature is great for leaving USB ports free as the MacBook only has two.
The drive is tiny, I can barely hear it (it might stand out in a complete silent room, not even sure).
The firewire cable is a bit stiff and short, so it can be tricky to move the disk around, but I would not remove a star for this.

All together, that's a great device and I hope it lasts. I already have a WD desktop hard drive bought two years ago and it has not failed me once.

Bascially I bought this to hang more Network Attached Storage off my router at home.

THE 80GB Ximeta drive I already have requires proprietary software and drivers as does this Western Digital MyBook out-of-the-box.

However a little sniffing around on the internet show that this drive can be configured as a stand alone FTP server using the Linux install that is already controlling the drive.

A great piece of kit if you are looking for access via any device capable of running an FTP client. (PC, iPod Touch etc.)

Very happy with my own home FTP server.

Knowledge of Linux and SSH required to unlock the real power of this little box.

I got my 1tb My Book on Monday, it lasted a whole day and then started smelling of burnt electronics. Contacted Amazon, they were excellent and sent me a replacement Thursday, started it up, backed up some files. Got home backed up some more files from home pc then suddenly it died. It lasted 8 hours.

Thankfully Amazon seem really good about replacing dodgy products but why stock them in the first place.

This little device is small enough to fit in a shirt pocket yet large enough to hold more photos than my professional DSLR can take during a three-week holiday.

Operation is easy, just plug it into a USB port. It even comes with a cable for the job. Some people have reported problems with the cable, I've used the supplied cable and a longer cable, on both a desktop and a laptop with no problems at all. It's even got a little plastic slider to keep dust out of the USB socket.

It really doesn't get much simpler than this. No battery, no power supply, just a tiny little unit and a cable.

Confirming all that has been written before about setup and slowness. I had been using this as a backup device on my home network. It would take about 7 hours to backup my PC using Acronis.

My 1Tb drive failed last night after 10 months of use. The indicator light shows a RAID failure. Unfortunately, I had not changed the RAID option to mirrored :-(

I intend to try to contact WD tommorrow and see if it will be replaced.

I wish I had read all of these comments before buying this drive. I had all my music on this drive which is now gone
