I bought a Canon EOS300 with the 28-90 USM lens as a point-and-shoot camera because slide film highlights the abysmal lens quality and inaccurate exposures of a 35mm compact zoom. Since that day both the compact and my (expensive) manual focus SLR system haven't come out of the cupboard. Lens quality is excellent, the evaluative light meter has a sixth sense and as a bonus it's light to carry and quick to use. The results have far exceeded my expectations of an "entry level" SLR. 99% of the shots are taken on the P (program) mode, eschewing the semi-auto, manual and creative modes.
